Ape Canyon 9.5 mm Ghillie Rope

I've been playing with it A LOT and it's pretty awesome. Feels a lot like Sterling HTP.

I love my HTP. Stiffness is excellent on rappel and the sheath is rock solid over the core. Good to know this is similar, might have to buy a couple lengths to play with. I find the HTP is a little hard to dress the knots but once they’re in they self-tighten and stay dressed very well. How does it take and hold knots by comparison?
Thanks!

I came across that rope a couple weeks ago. Far as I can tell, it is a house brand for Rock-N-Arbor. Seems they are building a product line under this "Ape Canyon" brand. I saw some aiders from them under the same brand, as well.

This makes me wonder about the origins of such rope. Who's actually making it? Where is it made? This info is hard to come by despite my searching, and that makes me cautious.

Just my thoughts.
I was wondering the same thing.
from what I can glean, Ape Canyon:RockNArbor::AeroHunter:New Tribe
A new company borne off a time-tested and consumer-trusted company.
Given RNA’s excellent track record and the quality of the Ape Canyon saddles, I would not turn my nose up at the quality and reliability/safety factor of anything they turn out.
I mean, if their stuff is good enough for @Fl Canopy Stalker @always89y @John RB then it’s quite good enough for me.

Just noticed this thread. ('Got a new phone recently and am not getting any notifications, and so I apologize if anyone was waiting on a response from me.) Any questions on the rope specs and certs would need to go through RnR, but yes, I do trust this rope. It's kinda stiff, which is good for some applications and not for others. For example, it works great with a Maverick hitch canopy anchor... but I wouldn't try a Blake's hitch with it.

On a philanthropic note, as a general comment on the safety of the saddle and larger hunting community as a whole, I am much less concerned about the exact and best rope for those of us here who know we need to be on one AND have a plan and path to ground if we need it. It's all our friends who don't and who "haven't had a problem with it" and assume they are safe. Pls consider figuring out how to get through to them. If I can help, let me know. Rifle season in PA starts Saturday. I am dreading the accident reports I am going to hear next week. Go call your friends and make sure they have their harnesses, foot straps and cellphone service. We'll never know what accidents we prevented but we will kick ourselves for any we could have. Cheers

As I understand things, Ape Canyon Outfitters is effectively a saddle hunting brand within RockNArbor. For example, arborists don't use the small diameter ropes we use, and so it helps both the Arborists and the Saddle Hunter's to keep stuff separated on the website. And yes, Aerohunter was a Saddle Hunting brand of the New Tribe (arb) company, but New Tribe went out of business and was not and isn't a part of RnA. Not sure how ya came to that conclusion, but it's not accurate. Maybe it was because I wore an Aerohunter Flex for 3 years. I bought it cuz it's rugged and was from from a reputable supplier. I am in the Pioneer now, for the same reasons, but Pioneer is lighter, more comfortable and less expensive. Cheers.

@John RB i wasn’t saying AH was affiliated with RNA, I was saying the relationship of ACO to RNA was the same as the relationship of AH to NT. It’s my fancy English Teacher way of writing the analogy that probably threw my meaning off. All those colons and no toilet in sight hahaha.

A year late to the party lol.....Has anyone used this and HTP 10mm (or 9mm) who could compare them? I had started another thread the other day asking about stiff rope for 2TC that I got some helpful info from (and recognize a few of you here). I'm trying to decide now between these two ropes. I've read that people love them both but haven't seen much info beyond that.

I’ve used them both (9mm HTP). They seem very similar on regular rappel with devices. I would say HTP gets a slight edge for packability, but the stiffness of the Ghillie makes it great for SRT/DSRT. I find the durability and size in my hand quite similar. I don’t think you could go wrong with either. If I were deciding today I would consider price, how I was going to pack it, whether I was ascending on it, and whether I had any devices where the .5mm is relevant for any specs.

Thanks, that answered my question. I want the stiffer rope for 2TC. And I'm only packing 2 tethers, so I shouldn't lose too much on packability.

Armbreaker is right on the money. I have two custom made 40' "half-lines", a Sterling htp 3/8 and a Ghillie 9.5 that I SRT with. I have used the Sterling for two seasons and just bought the Ghillie over the Summer. I've SRT climbed on the Ghillie about half dozen times so far and it is probably better for SRT although my Grigri+ descends smoother on the Sterling. After a trip up and down the tree, the Sterling is stretched/stiff and after figure 8'ing I have to shake it around to get it soft again whereas the Ghillie stays the same stiffness. I can pack both in the same Amazon pouch so the minimal extra stiffness of the Ghillie isn't a factor at 40'. For me, I'll probably be using Ghillie going forward for the cost and the fact that it is camo.
