Basic red/white bright headlamp

I am interested in seeing some suggestions, as well. I have been using a cheap Wally World headlamp with a left/right switch. White is too bright, red is too dim.

I like walking in with red, walking out or tracking with white, but my current lamp is subpar for how I would like to use it.

Sounds like I'll have to spend more than $10... :tearsofjoy:

Petzl Tactikka. Three levels of white light brightness, hold down the button and it turns to red. Hold it down again and goes back to white.

+1. Just picked up this for $30 when my Amazon cheapie died. (After seeing a bear at sunset…that was a nerve racking descent). Mine is called a Tikka but sounds the same. Pretty happy with it, it has a sequence, but it’s a no brainer, just a long hold to change white to red. 3 AAAs makes it easy to back up.

Same thing. Tactikka is just tactical color and Tikka is standard black. I have both.

I second the Tactikka, I have had one for several years and much prefer it to my Black Diamonds!

I ordered these the other day. The white settings are impressive especially at $7 a piece, however the red is pretty lack luster... Whomp whomp

I pulled the trigger on this one and it's amazing. The red on the lowest setting is brighter than the brightest red on my current headlamp. Plus it had free returns from Amazon, so it was a no brainer to check out. :)

Just following up, haven't been able to hunt, but took it on some dog walks at dusk and after dark and I've been very happy. It's not a cheap headlamp, but it's got a good range of brightness. There's a very dim "firefly" mode if you press and hold when the light is off, then 3 "regular" levels of brightness beyond that. The red levels are unlike anything I've ever seen before in a light; just insanely bright.

The color temperature is warm, which I've read is better for spotting blood. I wouldn't know, I'm a deer hunting virgin.

I'm still on the lookout for a headlamp with a very bright red setting. Back to the top for more suggestions hopefully...

i don't know if it was on this forum, but someone sent me a link (i've lost) to red headlamps for predator hunting that were somewhat expensive but bright

might wanna unleash google in that direction

I posted this in the other thread but I just bought this one after doing some reddit searching and it seems great. haven't had it long enough to weigh in on battery but both red and white have 4 settings, from pretty dim but still can see right in front of me just fine to holy hell why did I look at that blindingly bright light are my eyes ok. My very official measurements. https://www.amazon.com/Rechargeable-Headlamp-77outdoor-Lightweight-Flashlight/dp/B09MFBYN2C

I just ordered this one to try out. I like going in and out via red light, but could never find a headlamp that had a bright enough red option for my liking.

I'm not a fan of units with rechargeable batteries for the simple fact that they have a limited lifetime and if they go dead in the field, you can't swap them out for a fresh set.

However, this one appears to check a lot of boxes for me, and I guess I can always charge it in the truck on the way out to top it off.

I can still carry my old trusty Wally World Energizer lamp in the pack and 3x spare AAAs as a backup, if needed.

This is what you want. I used it last fall and loved it. By far the brightest red headlamp I've ever seen. I can take a pic at night if you'd like to see the throw/power.

I use the cheap Energizers from the hardware store or wherever. But I also have an AA Mini-Maglite with a red filter on it that I use when moving in the dark. I'm probably over thinking things but I want the light source to be closer to my feet, for better visibility of the ground, and also no higher than necessary, to reduce visibility.

I've seen hog and predator lights that attach to, or replace, the stabilizer. Might be an application for pre-dawn approaches through the woods.
