Best, lightest, easiest to use climbing stick?

I'm using the JX3 and have been using W.E steps and a black diamond 5 step aider. Climbing up is easiest for me and climbing down can be quite sketchy. I'm new to saddle hunting. I think I'm going to go to a set of climbing sticks. I would like everyone's opinions on the BEST climbing stick based on weight, and ease of use.

Definitely the One stick is the lightest.
When you ask, easiest to use, that can include alot.
Decide if you want to use a aider. Some sticks limit the type of aider you can use. The one stick cannot use a cable aider.

Trophyline is probably the cheapest and most versatile.

They’re built on a 1” tube that EWO uses and with their parts, you can evolve your climbing method as you learn what you like and don’t like.

I did this (Novix)... The only thing original is the tube....

I like the idea of a movable aider to gain heighth with less weight. The problem I encounter with a movable aider is on the way down. I am using a strap style black diamond presently. Can this be used with the tethrd?

Best way for the money would be to use your climbing method you have now and rappel down. Unless I hunt a tree that I have preset screw in steps, then I never climb back down, always rappel, its a safer and quicker option, in my opinion. God Bless!

The LWCG doubles and compacts w/ aiders are great. From what I’ve seen, the weight between the lightest sticks is negligible. I’m quite happy w the LWCG set ups. I like the wire aiders. The aiders that aren’t stable and made of webbing and all are total unstable death traps. I’m far better off putting first step high and pull up to it with your foot on the tree.

Where do you guys get your rappelling gear? Buy the rope by the foot?

Doublesteps.com is a great place to start. Dano even sells Kits.

I'm with you on this. I LOVE my doubles. Big steps, Light (1.5 pounds each for 20"). They grab the tree well. The buckless method is easy and silent and holds well. And possibly best of all the pack so flat. I know a lot pf people dilike the bulk of the ONE sticks stacked together.

If you are happy with how you're getting up, I'd cast another vote for rappelling down. You won't go back after you try! EWO has ready made kits, you can also buy static line by the foot at lots of places and put together a kit with a quick link and your choice of descender method.

I would also find that climb down sketchy. The rappel down would be easier and safer but I disagree that it's all pros. Buying the gear, learning how to rappel safely and extra gear weight are not trivial.

Have you considered WE steps with a knaider? That is my preferred method with WE steps for both up and down.

When I started rappelling I bought all kinds of gear, different rappel ropes and descending devises, everyone of these methods work, but the cheapest, probably the safest method, would be a large carabiner and the Munter friction rappel. All you need is the carabiner and rope. Lots of good videos on how to use this method, look up JRB video on the single rope rappel using the Munter. Very simple and I find it to work very well.

I don't have a lot of practice with the munter hitch, so how do you stop to take off a step and then continue your descent?

I use the JRB ascender hitch tied in soft bridge mode, it’s tied above my Munter and attached to my primary bridge, when I want to stop I just stop tending the ascender hitch and it grabs and holds me in place, when I want to descend again I just break the JRB loose and this engages the Munter until I reach the ground or need to stop again. I’m not near as experienced with this method as John whom I learned from, but would be glad to help anyway I can. He has lots of great videos that he explains everything in great detail. Don’t let the hitch tying scare you, if you watch his videos you can tie one quickly and accurately in a few tries. If you have a way to make presets in your hunting area, then you can ditch the sticks and just climb with a 8mm rope and two JRB ascender hitches, which is my preferred method. Lighter, safer, really easy and quieter imo, God Bless!
