Better Hunting Through Chemistry

I switched over to KETO over a year ago. During fall I usually eat 1-2 meals a day (IF) so I grab some BPC to start the day and then eat dinner. This year I got a little off track but when you are truly in ketosis you can go hard all day without eating if you have just a little body fat as your body is burning that for calories. But it is not something you just jump right into. To truly get fat adapted takes several months.
Is BPC bulletproof coffee? I know that stuff is like magic for cold boat rides.

I like that you mentioned broth as well. We keep gallons of homemade chicken broth on hand.

yes - I put 1 tbsp. of coconut oil, 1 tbsp. MCT oil and 1 tbsp. of grass fed butter in my AM coffee. I do not usually get hungry until dinner which can be really late during hunting season. If I want a mid day snack I will carry macadamia nuts, hard boiled eggs or an avocado. I don't need no stinking cooler :) KETO is the most the hunter friendly and energy producing way of eating I have ever tried.

For those of you who like 5he but cant hack the price, you can get a pack of of caffeine pills and a pack of B-vitamin supplements and achieve about the same effect. Just dont overdo it. When I was in college I did questionable things with that combo...

Ok no hate - but 5 hour energy does NOT give you energy at all. it may trick your mind, but it does not in itself give you any energy. It supplies unregulated vitamins and caffeine (a stimulant) energy is only produced from the burning of carbs or FAT. Most people burn carbs - the trouble being is that burning carbs also increase appetite and you can only resupply from an external source. Protein can be broken down and used for energy but it is very slow and also is carb/sugar related (i.e. stimulates insulin response)

KETO on the other hand is using fat as your energy source. You can get this fat from both external or internal sources so you do not get hungry and there is no crash like with carbs. Once your body has used up external fat it turns to fat you store in your organs and then uses fat in fat cells. Also, 1 gram of fat has more then twice the energy (kcals) as does carb or proteins. It is much easier on the body to burn fat as energy (cleaner) and it does not trigger insulin response causing the up and down crash and constant hunger.

Yep, I tell people that stimulants are like fuel additives. They dont do anything if the motor is shot or there's no gas in the tank!

At the end of the day, you can't run forever. A good night's sleep and a good meal have to happen at some point.

I have done 3 day fast with no loss of energy when I am in true ketosis. The body uses your stored fat for energy ( 1 gm fat is 9 kcal - carbs/protein only 4 kcals) and most of us have weeks, if not months, of fat calorie reserves. But yes, I always have a good dinner of protein, fats and plenty of green veggies. However, don't think you will get there in a week before hunting season - your body adapts over time and gets better and more efficient at using stored fat the longer you stay in ketosis. BTW - KETO also heals the organs, reduces BP and diabetes. I was a skeptic but the last year has completely changed my mind and habits.

I’d love to do BPC before hunts, but then I’d have to take a dump right after. Like RIGHT after. So just black coffee for me!

I agree that being fat adapted is a good way to be.

My favorite thing about KETO is that I only had to poop about half as much as when I eat carbs.
I didn’t stick to keto for hunting season, and am having a hard time getting back on it (discipline wise) during the holidays.

Eating carbs REALLY got me in a couple tight spots with my GI tract. I had a couple “code browns” that ended hunts. One of them, I almost didn’t get out of the tree in time. Let’s just say that this season really reinforced my idea that TP is an absolutely must.

I drink coffee on the drive to my hunting spot. My latest trick, though, is super watered down oatmeal (with a good bit of sugar). I can drink it from an insulated tumbler or thermos, and it's still really hot after a few hours. I get the sugar rush. I get some carbs. I get warm.

Also, a sweet potato wrapped in a fresh pair of socks. It's weird but it helps.

I jumped into KETO July 9th after reading the thread “ taking the Keto plunge” on the beast. I lost 50 lbs and feel better than ever. I hunt hard all day with tons of energy. Best thing I ever did.

Just take a large bottle of Gatorade and small bag of almonds in with me. Have my coffee before leaving the house. Can't do the energy drinks due to high blood pressure.

Coffee only after I'm done hunting.
Most of the time I'll grab whatever is quick and mobile and eat while getting my gear together in the morning.
Water I bring water every hunt. I also bring it on any tracking job. During season I have to watch that I stay hydrated.

Typical season only hunting weekends I'll drop 10+ pounds. This year I'm down 16 lbs.

But I also work come home, see my kids until 7:30 when they go to bed then go back to my own shop and work until 12-1am range sleep 4-5 hours and do it again. On fridays sometimes I work through the night and hunt the am.

I should've added to mine that I used to be tired all the time with terrible sinus pressure headaches. I got to the point where I kept getting sinus infections. Eventually saw a ear nose throat doc who allergy tested me on foods. Found out that I'm allergic to soy which is in everything. Cut all soy from my diet and a month later I had the energy I used to in my early 20s.

If your tired all the time I'd recommend getting allergy tested.

Wow, lot of Keto guy's here. I've been on it since Feb. 15th lost 70 pounds and high blood pressure. I did the BPC but it's got enough calories it's considered a meal. I drink a lot of black coffee. Never thought of bringing it out hunting with me. I will from now on.

Keto has cured my high blood pressure, chronic allergies, heart burn, pre-diabetes, low energy, migraines and finally - my sleep apnea ....... and like I said above its the constant energy level that is amazing. I only lost 38 pounds so far - but I have kept it off for a year and only need to get 15 more off before I am down to my high school weight. I will probably never go back to a high carb diet.

That's awesome Dave! Congratulations!
