Climbing Methods

Personally, I've done both...however what is on my stick is the ones I bought from Backwoods mobile gear. I have four different sticks that I can use. One muddy pro, one shikar mini, one shikar 17" and one EWO and all 4 have 3 step aiders from BMG. Each aider is a three step aider and each step are 13-14"
Awesome ya definitely going to have to invest in an aider

Just to let you know. I think it’s an unwritten rule your supposed to be wearing crocs when you post pics of yourself in a tree on here.:)
haha so that is something I will have to try out on the other hand my son and I spent the night in the hospital last week because he decided wearing his crocs with the horse was a brilliant idea and he is 12 years old and one toe short now they had to remove his Pinky toe! Dang crocs!

If you're interested..I can sell you my muddy pro and aider or just the aider itself. Looking at your picture, I think you and I might be close to the same height...I'm 5'4" and I am not using that muddy or the aider that was made for it. It's steps are 13" apart and there are three of them. Let me know...

Ya I’m a little over 5’6. What would you be wanting for them?!

Let me think about it. I'm in a PD meeting (online) right now and I'll contact you this evening.

Ok, got some time.

You’ll notice that the aider is on the top step. That way if you had a couple of sticks you could move it easier.

That’s really nice! Way more than my 30” stick is getting me!

As I stated earlier...I'm 5'4" and can get my feet at 6' on the first move and almost 12' on the second transition. That's why I love one sticking much more than DRT or SRT. Actually I have more tools in the toolbox to get up a tree...but my primary one is the one stick and a three step aider.

I use the Cain method...here you go.

Awesome thanks!!

Awesome you think 30” Or so would be good to go with?

You could use the 20", but I would only 1 stick with that if you're going to put an aider on it.. otherwise you're going to have to move that thing a million times to get to hunting height.... doublesteps.com for really nice 1 or 2 step amsteel aiders. Though I agree with a few above, I'd get a standard set of sticks and then check out your options and what you like from there. I was in the same boat as you but back in the spring. My first year out of a climber and into a saddle. I bought the 3 pack of 30" hawk heliums and I've climbed with the set and with 1 stick using a 1 step aider. I like both methods, but if I'm not going too far into the woods, I'm taking all 3 sticks... I'm just not efficient enough 1 sticking yet and I've practiced a decent amount. The reduction in weight is a nice change when you're hiking in a ways though, so if I go in about a mile, I'm going to 1 stick. Just sharing my thoughts from a fellow recent convert. Good luck!

As far as aiders go...the reason I use a 3 step aider with 12-13" between each aider step is because you can literally get away with climbing and putting your toe in the tree. If any taller, I've found that Aiders will pitch you from one side to the other. I used a big wall 5 step aider and tried climbing that...it literally pitched me out of the tree. I almost came home without it as i wanted to throw it as far as I could. Decided to bring it home and sold it that night. I talked with Mike from backwoods mobile and decided to go with a 3 step aider and each step 12". That would give me 36" in climbing ability and paired with the muddy pro, shikar or EWO then I can get my feet at 6' on my first placement and then to 11' on my second, 16' with my third and if I stop there...18' to my platform. Should I want to go higher...I can.

Now coming out of the tree...I rappel down and bring my platform and stick down with me. I do have a mini with a straight scout platform on the top stick and a double on the bottom that I also can use as my climbing and platform setup. That also has a three step aider permanently attached to the stick. If I use that one, I can use it alone or I can place that on my weak side platform. It weighs less than 2lbs as well.

So when you pack in your 3 sticks are they still at 30”? And how do you pack them in the best?

I came to decision to one stick it with an aider, seem best for packing and ease...but my only worry is if I happen to drop my stick...my plan is to have a rope with hook at the end, may take me some time but I think I could hook the aider to get it back...lol

OR...you could use a 30'-40' of rappel line as your tether as you climb up. That way if you do drop your stick then you could rappel down to retrieve it. Or put an 7-8' length of paracord tied to it and to you. There's a couple of options. I don't tie my stick to me...I found that having more cords on me was frustrating.

I checked out that option but thought about the 1 stick being better at all types of trees...and the extra investment in gear coupled with being unfamiliar with the gear, just thought it was a better choice for me... How much does 40' of line weigh?

My 40' of oplux that I use weighs less than my stick. About 1 lb or so...probably closer to 2 lbs with my quick link, safeguard and carabiner.

I do the one stick too, but with my 40' of rappel line.
