Cold Weather Saddle Hunting

I grabbed those Pnuma IconX vest and pants this off-season. Excited to try them out. Hoping to get by with that, possibly merino base (if needed), Klamath hoody and Pnuma Jacket and Pant for 20s and below this season. We’ll see how it goes.

I can get by in that Wick hoody for a good chunk of my hunt in the 40s so core heat usually isn’t too big of a deal for me. It’s my fingers and toes that get me. What gloves do you guys use that work well in the 20s and below? I’ve had some mild frostbite on my fingertips so they give me problems when it gets really cold.
I use smartwool lightweight gloves with handwarmers is all. As for toes, i have started using the artic shield boot covers in really cold stuff. THey are terrific, especially if you put a handwarmer in each one as well.

Last 2 years hunting from a saddle in MN, I've put my jacket on, with my bibs over it. Helps keep the jacket tucked in while in the saddle and the draft from getting up into my chest. Saddle over the top of everything. Bread bags over my feet, above the socks to keep my feet dry even if my boots are wet.

This year I've switched to an iwom xt, worn it once so far, but it is weatherproof so it should do the job.

Wonder Bread bags I hope.

I rely more on layering than bulky insulated outwear so for Mid November to Mid December say mid 20's to mid 30 degrees I use the cheap military fleece bibs over my base layers, and under my regular hunting pants and then a heavy duty hoody or a wool anorak and then a final jacket of some kind depending on how cold. The fleece bibs keep my mid riff warm where the tops and bottoms tend to separate and it works fine with the proper base layers. IF its windy and cold I will throw on a more insulated over jacket but last year someone had a fleece vest for sale on here and I have ended up using that to keep the bulk in my sleeves down. So my heavy duty hoody or wool Anorack then the fleece vest then the jacket. Back when Cabalas made good clothes I have a Revolution Fleece uninsulated top that has a quiet wind barrier in it so coupled with the decent base layers, the cheap military bibs and the fleece vest I stay pretty warm and everything on the business end where my saddle lives pretty much is the same throughout the season.

I’m going to have to get some of those boot covers. Easy enough to put on at hunting height?

I wear light early season gloves or glove liners and then convertible glomitts over them with a hot hands in the mitt part. Can flip off the mitt so have use of fingers but still have a warm spot for all my fingers.

Does anyone use a heated vest/jacket?
I bought the Pnuma IconX vest and pants this off-season. Yet to use them.

i also have a Milwaukee Tools heated jacket. Lasts about 3 hours on medium heat per battery. Helpful, but can’t say I strongly recommend it. A little bulky. Pairing the IconX set with Pnuma Tenacity Jacket and Pant this year. I’ll add in merino as needed.

I do.
I’ll have to look to see what the brand is.
It has 3 settings and I have yet to run out of battery on a hunt.

I’ve used it down to about 25-28 degrees; here’s how I wore it:

Lightweight Merino Wool base layer
Heated Vest
Lightweight Cabelas Down Jacket (sometimes)
Nat Gear Iron Fleece Jacket
Hot Hands inside a Hand Pouch/Muff

It’s very comfortable at those temps and has reduced a lot of bulk for me.

The coldest I’ve sat this year was 34 but I wore bottom kiln base, catalyst foundry pants, uncompahgre pants. Top kiln, Klamath, brooks down and corrugate guide jacket. I didn’t just stay warm. I felt warm. I loosen my boots and use a hot hands insole and a toastie toe and attic shield boot blankets. For my hands I wear the full or half finger talus gloves and put a hot hand in a brooks down mitten. Easy to get off and warm. Also wear a bream beanie in 350 weight wool and a mid weight gaiter. I pack all
My stuff in. I hunt 2+ miles back one way so I dress 100 yards from tree

I was cold yesterday morning and kept thinking how nice a heated vest would be. I ordered a Pnuma vest and an extra battery this morning to try out.

Are you buying one size larger on your mid and outer layers to account for layering? Having any issues climbing or drawing your bow, having 3 or 4 layers on top and bottom?

I buy the correct size for base mid and pants but buy up a size for jackets and puffy items. I have no problems at all with any of it. I actually missed a 5 point Monday in the exact set up I listed. It’s very packable too

Anyone tried the military issue ECWCS primaloft overpants? I've pretty much spent my recreational budget on saddle equipment this year and think in concept they could be a good, under $30 stop gap until next year and getting proper bibs. Long handles and fleece for the walk in, put the primaloft on in the tree when cooling off? I'm pretty well covered in the tops and coat departments.

Does anyone recommend using coveralls? Itd be sweet to find something like an IWOM but with individual legs instead of a sleeping bag bottom - if the legs were full zip up to the thigh you could pull it over the same way. It would be even sweeter if they had suspenders underneath

I was delerious from lack of sleep coming home from colorado elk hunt and impulse bought an IWOM, to realize i couldnt use it with my jx3 or my hammock tree seat.

I was looking at the arctic shield ones and was wondering if anybody used coveralls, or if bibs and parka were the way to go.
