Day hunt food

For an all day'r I will take a small baggie of homemade trail mix, throw in a few pieces of jerky and a butthole sammich for lunch which is a bagel with justin's peanut butter with honey and a few slices of pre-cooked bacon.

I see a bunch of guys who are slaves to their stomachs.
Do you to really need eat (no) or are you eating because you're bored or because it's a certain time on the clock? In what amounts to less than a 12 hour time period for a dark to dark hang you wouldn't come close to depleting your body's energy stores.
I bet y'all are the type to sit on the couch and watch Oprah and Dr. Phil too...

Slaves to our stomachs? Sure, no doubt. But the thread is about eating during a hunt, not survival. Major components to good hunting are mental focus, patience, and stealth. If your mental edge suffers because you’re not eating, you’re feeling sluggish because blood sugar drops, etc., that’s not putting you in the best position for success. Of the many factors that hunters stress about, eating and food considerations in order to promote consistent energy and focus throughout the day seems like almost the very easiest variable to control.

How about being diabetic...I'm a slave to living.

You never eat anything during the day…ever? That’s amazing.

I'm not likely to sit all day. I have taken stew in a thermos and loved it on a really cold day. A couple of granola bars, a water, maybe an ensure or GU replenishment gel are easier and quieter. Noisy wrappers are out.

I don’t understand why you would choose not to eat while hunting if you have the option. And what if you get lost deep on some public land, now you got nothing to eat?

I usually hunt on Saturdays, and started a pandemic tradition of 'flat food friday' with my kids so I'm usually carrying pancakes or pizza leftovers if I bring lunch. Either is still fine if it gets smashed. Not exactly a scent control guy over here lol

I guess the "dark to dark" made folks think of all day elevated....and I agree, if up in a tree not exerting energy u don't need much.
I don't think I've ever done an all day elevated...I walk a lot, climb up trees just to get a elevated view then get down to continue walking...if I don't take stuff with me to keep the energy up I will be thinking about going back to the parking area and taking lunch when I start slowing down....with food on me I can stay in the woods and have better chance of bumping into something

Unless anyone here is in low single digits for body fat % then none of you NEED to eat within a twelve hour period. Your body takes about twelve hours to digest the last morsel you shoved down your pie hole so technically AFTER twelve hours your body starts to use it's stored fat supply for energy which could keep you going for a few days with no ill effects.

I'm not making this up, do some research for yourselves. And to set the record straight I'm/we should keep this relative to a 12 - 24hr time period for healthy individuals. Those with medical conditions naturally have different caloric and nutritional requirements.

"Major components to good hunting are mental focus, patience, and stealth. If your mental edge suffers because you’re not eating, you’re feeling sluggish because blood sugar drops, etc." - If this were true the human race would have died out ages ago because they hunted for survival and went days without eating until they finally made a kill. Fluctuations in blood sugar levels are related to insulin spikes caused by the type of foods you eat. If you are not eating for a time period your insulin levels remain at a steady state. How many of you got sleepy after eating a meal? I bet everyone has felt the effects of a good food induced coma. Now has anyone ever gotten sleepy when they felt like they were "starving" and had to eat something for fear of not making it another minute? Probably not. Now think to when you were in that "need to eat right now" stage. You probably weren't aware at the time but your mind was highly focused but it's just that it was solely focused on finding food to ease the hunger pangs in your stomach. The pain in your stomach is caused by hormones being released letting your body know your stomach is empty. If you keep your mind preoccupied while this is happening the "feeling hungry" sensation will fade away and won't return for hours. Try this for yourselves and you'll understand why I made the statement of "being slaves to your stomach". It's a mental game is all it is.

I don't get hunger pains...I get a little irritable and I little scatterbrained..... Last things I need to have happening when I'm needing to focus on hooking up my ropes and squeaky pulleys

Sometimes I get migraines if I don't regularly eat. Not something I wanna deal with 2 miles in a swamp or having to cross water at night.
I hear what your saying though.

^Exactly. Not saying we NEED to eat in that 12 hour span, just that there are other benefits besides basic satisfaction of calorie requirements. Snacks really help when it’s 5 degrees and you’re 20 feet up a tree

Fellas... I enjoy eating. I enjoy it at the table, I enjoy it at a restaurant, I enjoy it in a tree. I am not a big fella, I exercise regularly and am “in the right shape” so I don’t think it’s a problem, yet.

I find pleasure in eating as well as I find pleasure in hunting. Combined... I enjoy eating while I am hunting. If you do as well, then take food and enjoy it. There is something about eating food after staring into the woods for a few hours that breaks up the day and makes me feel good. If you are worried about scent, or sound or being to heavy to rappel down out of your tree... well then hunt hungry. Maybe it will keep your senses keener. Those of you that like a snack, a sandwich or a pizza while spending the day it the tree, I say enjoy it. I won’t judge you either way.

If you are hunting you should be carrying a solution to your problem. Shoot something, problem solved.

Honestly I’m probably gonna struggle in that scenario. Not a good enough deer hunter and I’m not hitting a squirrel with my bow

If you hunt every day do you plan on fasting the entire deer season?

I won’t speak for others but staying at peak health is a goal of mine, deer season is no exception.

The only reasons I can think of to not carry food to the tree are: forgetfulness, laziness, or don’t want to carry the weight.
