Day hunt food

Sheesh, a request for "what type of food do you bring out" is somewhat becoming something else entirely. Don't eat? Ok, do you... I like to eat and be comfortable. Sure it would be lighter to not carry a coat in the winter, but I don't like to be cold either. One of my best tree meals this year was a leftover backstrap sandwich. Felt good to bring her back to where we first met. The silicone bags mentioned earlier was a good suggestion, unless I'm blind and missed it, anyone have a link or a brand they can reccomend? @Aaronpaul14

I'm not a "starve myself" kinda guy--if my stomach is growling and hungry, I'm going to have less fun and be more likely to fidget or leave altogether. While I don't do many all-day hunts, here's a baseline for a day's worth of food for a tree stand hunt:
  1. Lots of jerky (venison or beef) (1 pound plus)
  2. 2-3 packs of peanut butter crackers
  3. If it's cool enough that they won't melt, 2-3 Snickers bars
  4. Caffeine (either a Diet Mtn Dew or a couple Awake chocolate bars)
  5. A deli meat sandwich or wrap
  6. 1-2 pieces of fruit (apple, banana, orange)
  7. A bag of Skittles or other sweet treat (Rice Krispy Treats, homemade poppyseed bread, etc.)
I try to unwrap noisy wrappers at home and put them in thick ziploc bags to cut down on noise.

I have to eat, otherwise my bloodsugar drops and I go unconscious. On short hunts I took a tip from John E and started packing an Ensure. Quick, quiet, tasty, got all the good stuff to keep me going. On longer hunts I’ll throw in some trail mix, beef jerky, and granola bars.

Unless anyone here is in low single digits for body fat % then none of you NEED to eat within a twelve hour period. Your body takes about twelve hours to digest the last morsel you shoved down your pie hole so technically AFTER twelve hours your body starts to use it's stored fat supply for energy which could keep you going for a few days with no ill effects.

I'm not making this up, do some research for yourselves. And to set the record straight I'm/we should keep this relative to a 12 - 24hr time period for healthy individuals. Those with medical conditions naturally have different caloric and nutritional requirements.

"Major components to good hunting are mental focus, patience, and stealth. If your mental edge suffers because you’re not eating, you’re feeling sluggish because blood sugar drops, etc." - If this were true the human race would have died out ages ago because they hunted for survival and went days without eating until they finally made a kill. Fluctuations in blood sugar levels are related to insulin spikes caused by the type of foods you eat. If you are not eating for a time period your insulin levels remain at a steady state. How many of you got sleepy after eating a meal? I bet everyone has felt the effects of a good food induced coma. Now has anyone ever gotten sleepy when they felt like they were "starving" and had to eat something for fear of not making it another minute? Probably not. Now think to when you were in that "need to eat right now" stage. You probably weren't aware at the time but your mind was highly focused but it's just that it was solely focused on finding food to ease the hunger pangs in your stomach. The pain in your stomach is caused by hormones being released letting your body know your stomach is empty. If you keep your mind preoccupied while this is happening the "feeling hungry" sensation will fade away and won't return for hours. Try this for yourselves and you'll understand why I made the statement of "being slaves to your stomach". It's a mental game is all it is.

Although initially blunt, I find you to be correct. I used to be a guy whose day was wrecked if I didn’t eat breakfast and regular meals. Intermittent fasting has completely changed this and now I feel free of the constant urge to eat. If I skip a meal it doesn’t bother me much at all. I’ll catch the next one. Everybody is different but I can hike all day in the mountains and be just fine catching supper at night. The type of food probably pays a big impact as well. For me it’s nearly all protein and fat, small amounts of carbs, and nearly no sugar. I generally don’t bring food in the woods.

Yeah, although the initial message was a little strong I also agree. It's amazing how cravings, and hunger disappear and how much more energy you have when you cut out processed carbs and sugars and add a little fasting to your diet.

I have blood sugar issues, so I usually take venison or beef jerky, crunchy granola bars, dried fruit, a pack of peanut butter crackers, water and coffee. And one of those flat packs of tuna. If I'm all day a smashed PBJ as well.

I bring food but it seems like I forget about it until after the season when I'm cleaning out my pack. Usually a bottle of water or soda and something like a granola bar will get me by. Less chance I'll have to make brown in the woods.

I have the 40oz version of this, usually fill it with coffee for work or long drives. I have taken it into the woods but it’s a ton of weight.

I will say, 14 hours later the coffee is still steaming as long as you preheat the thermos. Run the sink water as hot as you can and fill the thermos for 5-10 min before adding coffee, done deal.

PB&J does it for me, usually I’ll bring some peanut butter bites as well during rifle season when I’m still hunting or tracking all day.

I usually bring a could slim jims or beef jerky. Maybe a granola bar. It holds me over til I get back home or to camp to eat a real meal. It also limits the chance of me having to drop a deuce in the woods

Some of us have trained our guts like we train our dogs...you go potty when I say you go potty. Get some freakin discipline in your life for Pete's sake, whoever Pete is.

Hunting season always restarts my fasting season. Then it crashes with the halloween candy. Then back to hunting and fasting as much as possible. For an all day hunt, I fast as long as possible, then I eat 1-3 jerkys, an apple, and a granola bar. A 5 hr energy. Sometimes I bring a peanut butter sandwich in the tactical box below

As a fat guy, who was formerly fatter, fasting is possible. You will find no one more psychologically or physically addicted to food more than me.

I used to be 343 lbs. You sleep for 8ish hours, and I dont usually eat for the last 2 hours before bed. So thats a 10 hour fast. Instead of waking up and stuffing my face, I would wait an hour. 11 hour fast. Then wait 2. Then wait 3 etc. Every few days, increase the time. next thing I am doing 18 hours most days and 20-22 hours other days. I promise you, once the headaches pass in the first two weeks, and fighting the pangs of hunger, eventually you will realize barring some health concern you do not need to eat nearly as often as you think.

I am now floating between 285-295 lbs. When my addictions start I cant fight it, but I use fasting to counter them and I don't gain weight back. If I am busy and not hungry I don't eat just because it's time to. The other night, I wasn't hungry for dinner and 9:00pm hit and I went to bed. Next morning, didn't eat until 11am. Didn't die. Fasting is a hormone reset and brain clarity and focus booster. My best thinking has been after a 3 day fast of norovirus, not counting seeing god in the porcelain bowl as I rethought life decisions. Fasting is amazing if you are able to do it.

Another great thing about fasting is if you eat once per day, you're most likely going to poo once per day, which is handy for hunting season.

Heading into the holidays I will push more fasting, then start the new year to do my next 50lbs of weight loss journey. With fasting I can eat most of what I want within reason, and lose weight. And as far as nutrition, skipping muffins, mcdonalds biscuits, and bagels is not malnourishing me.

That's really great you can do that. Not all of us can. I have hypoglycemia and if I went with no dinner, no protein, my blood sugar would be crashing by 7 the next morning. And that can get ugly. My brother does what you do with the same good results. Good hunting!
