Deer Hunting Log

@skell I love this!! So awesome being phone friendly. That's a great idea. I'm finally hitting the woods Sat for the VA archery opener and I'll give this a run. I've been using notes and then transcribing to excel after the hunts - and sometimes I wait and do multiple entries at a time, so it gets to be a process. This is awesome.

The link takes me to request edit access screen. I sent a request. A copy and paste into chrome browser brings an error message that it can't be found. Screenshot_20181004-114341_Chrome.jpeg

Try it again....I thought it would work with read only access. Maybe it won't let you make a copy without edit access... I changed it to anyone with the link can edit. Let me know if that allows you to copy.

Those checking it out...when you make a copy you can easily edit the form to add/change information you are wanting. I based it off @kelly.jayp spreadsheet, with a few minor adjustments for my preferences. But where the "request edit access" button is in the picture above, will now be an edit button, which will allow you to customize the form to your liking. For instance, I didn't include the "90's" for temps...because I will not be out if it is 90+.

Happy to contribute! Google forms is a hidden gem.

@skell - question - I linked to my master file but the form looks like it will write to a specific tab in the sheets file. Anyway to link that over to my tab with my history - before I copy / paste?

Thank you guys. Im a bit lost around some of these things. I try to hide it. I never would I have figured this stuff out. Many thanks.

I would imagine it is possible. With that said it would probably take digging into the script behind the form. I've messed with coding in the past, but I am a LONG way from being an expert. Unless someone else here is good with that stuff you are probably better off with the copy/paste option. Personally, I would copy out of Google Sheets into Excel. I just find it easier to manipulate the data.

Very interesting. I've frequently thought about running a log of some sort, and even tried using the logging feature in Scoutlook. It just didn't work for me. Maybe what you guys are running is more useful and something I'll actually use.

The big question, though, is what useful information are you actually getting from these entries? It seems like there's such a small sample size for the number of things being measured. Not knocking anyone, I'm just wondering.

I think that is a legit thought. I think this is something you would have to do with the thought of the benefit not showing until 5+ years down the road.

For me its a better way to keep track of my yearly success/failures. And maybe in 10 years I'll have some directly observed patterns that show when my increased chances of success are for my area. I think patterns others observe are beneficial, but there are not many absolutes. I want to know the patterns of the deer I hunt and if they deviate from what others observe.

That's kind of what I figured and expected; you're not going to get anything more than a "more often than not, deer do action-x." I wonder if people are expecting more than that, though. I'm more interested in kind of logging my success rates (efficiency) and fine-tuning stand locations (e.g., wind direction-A means deer use trails 1 & 3). I'm finding that I have less time to hunt now that I have two little boys, so I need to get real efficient real quick.

It would be nice to associate activity with wind, barometric pressure, etc. but I don't hunt enough to get enough data for that (and I doubt many of us do).

I have 2 boys, a 2 and a 5 yr old. I hear you on time. I dont really expect to gain much quick. But, i have been hunting the same public ground for over a decade and right now I'm sitting here wishing I had that data for all my past hunts. So, I've started collecting with the thought of some data is better than none. And in another decade I can look back and see if anything stands out. Maybe I never end up doing much with the data...but today, I would be looking it over if I had it!

Ha. I have one that just turned 3 and one that will be 5 tomorrow. I've been out once this year on a squirrel hunt/scouting trip, and they started logging that spot three days ago. I think this year will be a scout and hunt fresh sign type of thing, which I've never done before.

I agree. If I had info from years prior, I'd be scouring it hard but I just wonder if there's that much there. Like, I know Deer Lab is popular but I just can't get down with it.

Does anyone use deerlab? I've often thought of it but not sure it would help me. My hunting land is 4 hours away and I can't get to camera that often. Sometimes only 2x a year. I would think that you need data/photos more often to see deerlabs benefits.

I assumed someone did. Even Scoutlook is offering a logging feature, though. Predictive hunting strategies is what they're trying to do, I think.

You have to build up the history with an area. I had 5 years on a place in NC then it sold so on a new property and rebuilding data for that place. Plus some data points aren’t property specific. One thing it illuminated on my NC lease was I hunted one stand too much and data showed the impact. This won’t capture elements beyond your control like pressure but it can give trends over time. It takes just a couple minutes and then end of the season you can analyze

@skell thanks again for the Google document/survey. I edited my version a bit more. I am assuming I could copy mine and keep track of multiple hunters from my drive account. I'm certain the rest of the people I hunt with would be interested but most are not that tech savvy.

You're welcome! A couple of way to do what you want.

1. Make a copy for each hunter. Give them the url for the form.
2. Add a new question 1 that is a dropdown for hunter name. Then give the url for your form.

I would probably go with the second option. It puts all the data in one sheet, but can still be broken down by hunter. And if down the road you want to analyze the data overall, you aren't stuck copying the data into a single sheet.
