DIY 3 ounce deer hoist

That's one of the best DIY ideas I've seen on here. Thanks @mtsrunner .

Thanks. It’s really just an amalgamation of other kits I have seen combined with stuff I use for backpacking and hammock camping. I lie awake at night thinking of stuff like this. Usually, when I try to put my ideas into action, something doesn’t work the way I envisioned. I really wanted this kit to have zero moving parts, but the pulleys are actually worth it for the lack of friction. They increase the efficiency dramatically.

How bout a link for the ronstan pulleys. Or point me in the right direction, please

Here you go.

DanO is going to have the whole kit with options on doublesteps.com in the very near future. His buying power and the ability to ship from one source should make it less expensive than trying to put everything together separately like I had to do as I was tinkering with different options. I had everything but the double pulleys already laying around, though. DanO emailed Ronstan and linked this thread. Their response from customer service was awesome. He shared the email with me. I learned a lot about friction and mechanical advantage.

Excellent tutorial. Great explanation and description of what, how, and why.

Thanks. My wife did the video with my phone and her patience was wearing thin. I was almost through the first time and kept getting work calls. I switched to airplane mode and had a couple of other blunders. Probably took us close to 45 minutes to get a decent take.

I’m not thrilled with the video, but I wanted to get it out there so DanO can point people to it once he makes his version of the kit available. There are things that I forgot to cover, but I think it will serve its purpose and people can follow up with specific questions and suggestions for improvement in the system. It can be easily altered to fit different needs. I think Western hunters will want a different top anchor so they can raise their quarters higher to avoid scavengers. At that point, the pack-a-pull kit might make more sense even though it has more moving parts.

So it took a little longer than anticipated to pull it together - too much going on lately. But it is available now. Free 4" x 4" EWO decal with first few purchases.

Couple of videos sowing the updated kit.

So here’s my question. I have this kit from EWO and used it on a dandy Michigan buck last Sunday. Only issue I had was I couldnt reach high enough to get the alien high enough to pull the bucks head off the ground it was still touching, made it tough to get the neck meat. I’m 6’0 Got any trick to help with that? Thanks!

Yeah, I have the same kit. Haven’t used it yet, but had already thought that might be a problem. Thought of a couple of possible solutions. First, if you are carrying a stick or one stick, strap it to the tree and stand on it to do your rigging higher in the tree. That should put everything several feet above head height. Second, I bought another long dynaglide line thinking that I would throw line #1 over a limb that would go to the top pulley. I would then rig the four way using line #2 with lower pulley attached to the deer. After rigging the four way with line #2, you could then raise the top pulley using line #1 and tie off line #1 to a tree. Then you could use line #2 to raise the deer to whatever height you want and tie off Line#2 to the tree. I haven’t put in on the tree yet to figure out the exact rigging yet, but as just a thought, it should work.

I have one of these too and haven't used it yet either. I need to get on this and soon. So many situations where it would make skinning and packing out way better.
I killed on about a mile back this year and at first I was like I’ll just grab those horns and pull him out. Ha! ha! I went about 15yards and decided that wasn’t going to work Lol. So, I decided that I would skin it on the spot and drag the meat out. Dropped off my gear, pickup my kill kit and sled and picked up a friend on the way back in so I didn’t need to use the hoist. Just threw my rap line over a limb and pulled him up. I pulled the meat out on a sled by myself. Man that was so much easier than either dragging the deer or carting (did that last year) him out. I’m sold on skinning in the woods now.

7 deer this year and only gutted one which was a big mistake lol I thought I’d cart him out and it was terrible.
