So I’m wanting to try one sticking as I’m currently using WE Steps w/ k/s and it’s just not my thing. Was thinking of assembling the pieces to turn one of my hawk helium’s into a one stick but priced out the cam cleat, rope, and a 3 step aider and it’s still $105. The Ult. 1 stick I would build on EWO is like $235. $235 seems like a lot to spend for 1 stick but hell, I’m spending over 100 on dohickies to attach to a stick.… might as well just buy the better stick, right?… anyone modify a hawk helium and not feel the need to upgrade immediately after?… though could be a fun garage project too… so there’s that I guess.

I cut my helium down to 15", added a cam cleat, EWO stand offs, and a 2 step ultimate aider. I really like it. I got a good deal on a beast stick, so I have been using that recently. I have been thinking about going back to the helium. I feel like I had more toe space with the EWO stand offs.

Are you going to use a separate platform at hunting height? If you are not, then I say get the UL because that extra 100-150 is the platform. I use a cut down Hawk with only bottom step and cam cleat all season (all 5 days! haha) and it work great. Packable, light, etc. It will not be as solid as the EWO which I got to try, IMO, it is the best one stick setup. But since l only need to stand on it for a few moments as l move tether, I did not think it was worth spending money on a high end stick setup, which I do not regret. But if you dont already have a stick, then I say get EWO, buy once cry once, and resale value are pretty good.

i don’t really one stick all that much. But when I do, I use a cam buckle strap. A two step muddy pro with the cam cleat removed and a versa button installed. And a single 15” long webbing aider.

my cost was a 10.00 versa button and a 10.00 climbing sling to make the webbing aider.

odds are you can do something similar for low cost. One stick climbing does not require use specific equipment. Use what you have man.

So my experience was the opposite I used a beast mini with an ultimaider & couldn’t stand onesticking ( I tried a 1/2 doz climbs) with cam buckle & rope mod (no cam cleat). My opinion changed when I got a dedicated stick from EWO with a decent platform & cam cleat it was a much better experience.

I went down this road with a hawk stick and tried one sticking and hated it. Then the UOS came out and I decided to try that. The difference was unreal in how much better one sticking was with a properly designed one stick.

Couple weekends ago on a trip I somehow managed to leave my Stepps in my buddy’s truck when he went to a different WMA, so all I had was a single WE Stepp and my K/S. I managed to “one-stepp” climb a couple times that day. I was actually surprised at how easy it was. If you don’t like the K/S, you probably wouldn’t like it, but you’ve got all the stuff if you want to give it a try. I one-sticked some last year so the concept wasn’t new to me.

The only thing that was a pain was making sure it was really cammed over and solid. Tying/untying the knot while hanging wasn’t bad.

One stepp with a cam buckle strap and single step aider got me up a tree several times easily.

I’m 100% bought in on rappelling down no mater what climbing method you use (I just feel much safer). That said, if you’re always packing a rappel setup, you’re really not limited on how you get up the tree. It’s came in handy more than once.

I am going to build an EWO stick to run as my primary.
I have my beast stik which is working great for me but,
I read about a step breaking on a beast stik so I emailed them asking to buy steps without the cutouts.
They have not answered my email over a week so I am going to retire my stik as a back up and build one that I won't worry about breaking At least until someone does..

Any reply would of been good. When I inquired about buying stiks they got back to me in short order, maybe they are out of state now..

Try your hawk helium as a one stick before dropping the cash!! I have a friend that uses his Hawk Helium exclusively as a one stick, he's happy as a clam.
I agree with this. I’ll admit one-sticking became easier with a dedicated EWO one stick, but I was convinced of the method after one-sticking on a Hawk Helium 20”. I used the stock cam buckle strap. All I added was one 18” aider hanging on the bottom step around the front of the stick. If you enjoy it, you’ll have your feet wet for an EWO stick. If you hate it, I don’t think the process is gonna be altogether different with a dedicated stick. (Although, a cam cleat does make attaching and undoing the stick far easier.)

So my personal opinion on this topic is don’t make yours work to “try it” chances are if you think you’re going to like it and you’ve made it to the point of wanting to try it out your gonna like it. Find someone who has a stick you can try and if you fall in love just spend the money. I cut down an xop to try it out and added double steps. Next thing you know I ordered a cam cleat then an Amsteel rope mod then standoffs then a stick platform. I don’t know what I’m into it for but I know it’s well over 235 dollars especially when everytime you order it’s 12 bucks in shipping. Pay the shipping once spend the money once and commit to it once would be my opinion.
Sincerely,
The asshat that spent to much to
DIY it

this is kinda what i was thinking... i will cut it down and use an aider cuz i get hung on everything going through thick brush with the full lengths... and i hate attaching the buckles...

I bought a Hawk stick, added a cam cleat and their small platform to see how one sticking worked for me. I ended up buying the the Ultimate and keep the Hawk as a backup. The larger standoff on the Ultimate made one sticking much easier. I did replace the platform with a regular step and use an EDP for a platform.

This is what i'm thinking is going to happen. I hunt off a predator so I want the regular step up top as well.. figure...if I'm going to upgrade it anyway, I might as well buy the ultimate one stick.. that way i still have a full set of OG heliums I can give to a nephew or keep around for easy walk in hunts.. honestly this whole post is just a typed up internal monologue and I think we all know I'm just going to end up buying from Dano.

Newbie here, started with the Hawk special. Hawk minis and Hawk lock on 20+ lbs. Couldn't get higher than 12 ft. Had to be the right tree. Decided to try the saddle, tried the Trophyline Covert lite settled on the Cruzer XC (much better IMO, made in Merica too). Used the minis with aiders got up to 17 ft on the right tree with the Hawk Platform (12+ lbs). Bit on the one stick idea, but since I am a buy once or twice, cry once subscriber and dedicated DIYer. I went with Eastern Woods Outdoors Ultimate Platform and I am really impressed. I haven't hunted it yet but in the backyard demo tree she is solid as a rock. 15 inch ultra light stick (I'm short so the smaller step is nice), 3 step DIY webbing aider gets me 6 ft off the ground on the first move at 4.2 lbs. Since I was learning about the benefits of Saddle hunting (no deer taken yet) I consider the expense of the first couple tries to be admission fees. But I now have other options to one sticking and a complete second setup for the grandson. A big shout out to Eastern Woods Outdoors for the free upgrade on the stick. You have a loyal customer for life. Now if anyone has any idea on how to quieten the cam cleat when removing the rope, I'm all ears.
