I’ve been using onx for multiple years. Just started trialing Gaia this year (new hunter I am mentoring is using it).
One use case is that I set tracking on my walk out so I can follow the track in reverse when I end my hunt. Pretty standard.
Last Saturday after packing up, I got a black screen with onx. Reboot the iPhone, still no joy. The Gaia worked like a charm.
I had to uninstall and reinstall onx to get it to work again. And I lost my offline maps doing so. But do I really want to risk having to do that when it is dark and I need to find my way back to my truck? Saturday was a very disappointing experience with onx for me.
Thank goodness Gaia was working.

I have both and run both while hunting. I find Gaia’s user interface not as sleek as onx. Also, onx is easier to see property boundaries. That said, gaia has been rock solid for me. I am really impressed with Gaia. and Gaia never crapped the bed on me while dark and counting on it to navigate out of a swamp at dark.
For me, I am going to lean heavily on Gaia and just use onx for property boundaries.
Whatever one is using, I think it prudent to carry a physical compass and be aware of the general direction one needs to go to get back to the vehicle.
