WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Here’s my situation… I have two neighbors, a father in one house and a son in another, who each have large dogs.
They do nothing to control the dogs and have in conversations mentioned that the dogs have drug in over 10 deer carcasses last year.
In the meantime I see no more deer on my property.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Thanks

If this was my neighborhood I’d try and remain neutral with my neighbor so that they’d continue giving me information and to maintain a civil relationship. Dealing with neighborhood conflicts personally rarely works out for the best, UNLESS you already have a mutual respect and think you are all capable of kindly navigating a hard conversation. Meanwhile I’d call fish and game / the environmental police / the dog officer and report the incident and ask for their advice. If you create a documented history it will make dealing with this in the long term far more effective. Trail cameras of the dogs chasing or dragging dead deer on your property would go a long way to make your case. And if you are ever aware that the dogs have a fresh kill that’s a great time to get an EP to pay the neighbors a visit.

Wow, this is an interesting post.

Are we talking a neighborhood or acreage?

What kind of dogs? I assume from your post the dogs are believed to be killing the deer?

What were you doing with the deer on your property? Hunting them? Feeding and watching them?

First step I think would be to find out what the rules or regs are there for them being off leash. Then talk to the appropriate LEO. I might try to in casual conversation with them find out if they wear gps collars or are chipped. When I had those answers, there would be no further discussion on a public forum about what to do.

In my parts it’s known communally keep your dogs in check or they get taken care of. I’d first bring it to them and if they show no signs of fixing the problem then the right answer is probably get the law involved though I know what I’d do.

If you live in a metropolitan area you can bet your rear that there are leash laws. If you live in a rural ag area their probably still leash laws, but sadly those aren’t enforced typically.

I live 35 miles SW of Atlanta on 40 acres. I have a German Shepard Service dog that is Border Trained, Personal Protection Trained, and Seizure Trained for my 21 yr old Autistic son. She is also very protective of him. I do not keep her on a leash because it is counter productive for what I trained her to do. Long story short I’ve had to go to court a couple of times because someone has come down my drive when my son and dog were outside, and the visitor was chased back to the car. The Pooch Police don’t like Dogs at Large”. The Magistrate Judge for my county, has common sense. He understands that if you drive down a 2000’ gravel drive, ignore the 5 posted signs, see a barking German Shepard with her hocks up, and still decide to try to spread the word of God, it’s not my fault if you get nipped in the ass.

But back to your issue, look up “Dog at Large”, “Leash Laws” and “Ferocious Dog” laws in your county. If the Pooch Police won’t help, see if you can find out who they carry their Home Owners insurance with. They will cancel them in a heart beat if there is a “ferocious dog” on the property.

I am a dog lover…I’ve owned hunting dogs my whole life. I was so heart broke when my last Lab died 3 yrs ago I quit waterfowling. I will say this, I have no use for an untrained, bad behaving, disruptive dog. There are ways to solve your problem quietly, but that needs to be a last resort.

Acreage
One dog is like a great-pyrenees and the other is a border collie mix. And yes the neighbor said they kill anything that comes in their pasture. Problem is they don’t stay in their pasture.
And yes I hunt for deer.
Thanks

It seems to me that even if there is no leash law it’s likely a dog is expected to be “under reasonable control.” And I’m hard pressed to imagine any state that allows dogs to harass and kill wildlife outside the context of a controlled hunting situation with human oversight.

I'd start with cell cams and have some documented proof. You can show it to him in a strategic manner. No need to go balls to the walls

People who don't respect boundaries (or borders) suck

I'd try to have a calm, rational conversation with them about it. If the problem continued I would call the sheriff dept. out to deal with it. Another option is to take the dogs to the pound when found on your property, when they have to start paying money to get their dogs out of dog jail maybe they will start being responsible dog owners. I know some guys will SSS but I cannot harm a dog that doesnt know better due to idiot owners.

Agree and man I hate that SSS saying. Guys on AT always say it and think they're impressing people

You could always set leg hold traps for totes, and catch them. Leg hold traps are very humane, and will not hurt the dogs. Once you catch them call the pound. Or, take them to the pound. There is actually an article in the Meateater news letter that discusses how Yote trappers actually catch strays unintentionally on occasion, and how the owners react. Some good, some bad, but the dogs are never harmed by the trap.

I always remind myself not to attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity. But it's hard to not take it wrong when it is so obvious.

These neighbors might not realize that other people don't appreciate their dogs on the land of other people hectoring the wildlife, especially the deer they want to hunt. It's hard to believe people are so selectively dumb when their own self-interest and lack of self-awareness is involved.

The fact that these folks offhandedly brought this up indicates that they might just be totally clueless.

PS....OP might need to underline for them that just because they possibly killed 10 deer doesn't mean that they didn't chase off 100s or harm many more.

When about to discuss something with someone like this, I like to have a practice conversation in my head where I basically say "if I was in their position and didn't want to admit I was wrong, then what would I say?" and then have smooth comebacks ready.....still doesn't usually work! People hardly ever admit to being wrong and it's one of the worst things.

Yep. Defensiveness is the language of the low EQ!

Step 1: find out for sure if your neighbors are just jerking your chain because they feel you’re sensitive, know it bothers you and are enjoying it.

Step 1.1: ignore anyone telling you to set traps for the neighbor’s dogs.
