Emergency Descent?

Thank you. This picture is worth a thousand words!

Remember to test and ensure your autoblock can’t be pulled into your ATC at or close to ground level...

The autoblock can safely be used under your ATC just ensure you understand the process and practice from ground level.

Thanks for the information!

I think after weighing all the options I’m going to just go with a length of 8mm rope. It will be separate from my lineman’s belt and tether. It will also be in my dump pouch in case I can’t reach my pack if the top step kicks out.

I figure I can girth hitch it around the tree and tie a bowline knot for a foot loop. Then I can use the inchworm method to get down. I will practice this of course. Any flaw in this plan?

Yes, this should work. I will also practice this method. More we practice, better prepared we are for emergencies.

Adding a belay device and an auto block adds an ounce, gets you to the base of the tree in 10 seconds, and requires very little effort. And costs about 20.00

And am I correct in thinking you need double the rope length than your hunting height? Like 30’ for 15’ platform height etc?

That's only if you're doing drt climbing or descending not for srt!

I did another practice climb/sit this morning. I’m using a knaider and swaider and I’m super comfortable (and relatively fast) with it.

On the way down I thought I’d try out the one stick method as well as the foot-looped rope/inchworm method. Nope! Both suck for me. I think the belay method is in my future.
