filming archery

I do not own one of these, but if I were going to have something on my bow, it would be this…I’ve seen videos from them and they are much better then the cell phone mounts.

Watched this the other night. Looks interesting. I don't film my hunts either but I might give this a try. Looks easy and inexpensive. Best of all it's light weight.

If you hunt more open terrain like near fields and such a cam would be fun.
Here in PA mtns, you frequently get mere seconds to execute a shot from the time you see him to when he's gone forever. No way I'm spending the time putzing around with a camera

I’ve been piling up deer with a bow for over 20yrs, and I still wouldn’t feel comfortable trying to film. I’d always forget to do something or screw up the shot, because I was screwing with the camera.

Nope. It would be useful if you could get a clear picture, but none of the weapon-mounted cameras I have seen achieve that level of video quality. I'm not fooling with a camera arm out there unless I am tagged out and filming for a friend.

I've probably killed 15+ on video all self filming. First thing I tell everyone is you will miss opportunities at deer if you are filming. At some point you have to decide if you want footage or to kill it.

I have not tried it but with the image stabilization technology out there now, it might be possible to have decent bow mounted footage but I have no experience with it. The stabilization works great on my go pro but with no zoom even close deer are too small in the video.

I own a shotkam for all my shotgun hunting and it does have an archery setting. I mounted it on my compound as a test and the vibration was entirely to much to see well.

I did some hodgepodge film with my phone over bait. I had the phone gear tied to my tether. Worked ok but unless the camera is in plane with ur arrow it isn't as useful as u would think as far as determining where the arrow hit.

It is easy enough to keep a strong gear tie with me and rig it if I want....I don't think I want to spend any money on it. It definitely adds another complication to an already stressful and really complicated situation. It wasn't that bad with the bait holding the critters but in a public land setting it normally happens real quick so unless it was aimed up and ready I probably wouldn't have the time to mess with it. On gun hunts should be easier but it is tough with a bow..... But it still can be done obviously so don't let our comments hold ya back. hahahaha

This video is what inspired my gimbal purchase… auto tracking solves a big problem, at least in theory. You’re still left with a phone cam that is going to struggle in low light but I figured I’d give it a try and see what happens.

With the camera pointed slightly off from the arrow path and lower light u can only see where the lighted nock was. With the weird angles and the exact broadhead impact location not known and the animal in motion it can be almost misleading. Pay close attention and read the arrow...films just to show ur buddies IMO

Here’s a video from my Painted Arrow Mag Pro. It gets a bit blurry from the string release vibration, so I’m not sure if I’d lose an animal that was actually running off?? Also, the fact it briefly tips down from the shot release could impact traceability??

I need to experiment with it some more.
Note: this vid makes my bow sound way louder than it is.

Just my opinion but anything mounted on your bow isn't going to allow you to see shot placement as the vibration from the bow firing will cause blurriness in the video. If you want to see placement you need a separate bow arm and a lighted nock makes it 10x easier to see placement. Again just my 2 cents.
This is what I am experiencing with my new Mag Pro.... :(

It’s a combo bow and phone thing. My new phone has way better zoom and clarity and then you can slow mo it too. Works well even with what most would probably consider a more entry level bow (PSE Brute NXT). Also helps to do some of the dampening tips in these threads. My old phone is darn near garbage video though, doesn’t zoom with clarity as well or absorb the vibration imo.

Recording your archery hunts can be very helpful for shot placement analysis and tracking wounded game, especially during your first season. It provides valuable feedback for improving your skills and increasing the chances of successful recovery.

Anyone had success with filming with an iPhone and a gimbal? I’m thinking about trying that as my main camera. I’d have 2 action cameras to get different angles. One attached to my bow for the shot then then the other on the tree for a 2nd angle. Does someone have a setup like this?

If it's your first season hunting with a bow I would just get lighted knocks and focus on the basics, in my opinion adding a camera arm and turning the camera on/off etc is just adding too much to the process. I'm impressed by the guys that can do it all, but they are generally more experienced hunters not novices.

I had a small camera like those ones you see mounted to guns. It did ok, but that fisheye effect (like looking through a peep hole in a door) wasn't working too well. Made everything look a hundred feet away, and was only 40.

I was able to film my buddy shoot his first buck with the DJI gimbal and my iPhone and also self film a doe kill this year. It’s a super awesome setup. It always keeps the phone steady and balanced. Using the active track is awesome for hunting in big wide open areas (open hard woods or field edges) but anything super thick it doesn’t work so well. It loses the deer pretty quick. I’ve been able to film all kinds of deer this season with the setup.
