Filming hunts with Saddle

I have a different question for the pro's on there. I have an older sony handycam(HDR-CX7) that I got years ago, was thinking about using it to film hunts. I don't really know what else I need besides a good camera arm. I don't have any microphones, and frankly haven't seen much compatible with my old camera. Would it be easier to get a cheaper camera than mess around with the old one? Also what else do I need? Software, mic, remote, lenses, lense shade?

What are the cameras you all are using? Is there a separate thread for that question sorry?

I'm into it big time. More money than brains. I figure somewhere around 5k in actual filming gear and another 5k in computers and editing stuff. You'd never know it. My videos suck but this old dog keeps trying. You can see my stuff here if you look around. A couple years back I took the camera to fl.on vacation. I filmed my girlfriend in the bird cage at Brevard zoo. She had bought 2 cups of nectar to feed the birds. As soon as she went in she was swarmed by 10 McCaws. they were crawling all over her to get at the nectar. I had been looking for some video in my separate hard drive and stumbled across it. I had completely forgotten about it and laughed my ass off watching it again.

I would say it would be a tremendous thing to have for a young family as you would have lifetime memories to bring back many yrs from now. And on the hunting side of things previous posters are correct. Not only does it bring you back to the hunt but it floods you with forgotten memories of that time.

Ya im on the fence whether I would really go back and watch the footage to justify the crazy amount of money it would take to get started. I just remember when my dad recorded over my 5th birthday party that was on VHS. No one in my family seemed to care. After all, Ghost was a damn good movie. RIP Patrick Swayze

I have a Sony Handycam CX7, a Go Pro knock off, and a Nikon SLR boot sure what model.

I'm trying to keep this on a reasonable budget.

I'm using a Sony FDR-AX53 for my main camera with a Rode Videomic pro and Fotga remote. I also have a Sony AS100V for the overhead camera and a Tactacam 4.0 on the bow. I've been considering trying a Sony X3000 on the bow with it's crazy good image stabilization but haven't taken the plunge.

@bowhunter15 another great video. On an older video you went over different cameras. You demonstrated how fuzzy the go pro gets if you try to zoom during editing. If I remember correctly that go pro was 1080p. Have you tried it with one of the newer 4K action cameras. I wouldn’t want to film solely with an action camera but don’t really want to spend the money on 4K if it’s only being useful to show me taking a shot and b roll. I’m not so pretty to look at that you need to see me in hd. Then again If I could crop and zoom and still get decent quality of say an animal at 30 yards it would be worth it.

Lol everyone responds to @bowhunter15 and his awesome collection of gear and skips giving me advice. #Sad face

What's your goal? The next Meat Eater? or just saddlehunter.com fame? I would try filming with the old one and decide after if you need something new. As far as software I'm trying out Davinci Resolve, they have a free version that's a million times more capable than I am, but youtube is walking me through it.

Ahhhh.....none of the above, lol. I actually just want to be able to review shots at the moment. I'd love to be able to share hunts with my family but I'm not looking to be the next youtube hunting star or anything. I would also like to be able to film hunts for friends/family and eventually my kids. Thanks for the software recommendation, I'll check it out.

Thanks for the software recommendation

I have been playing around with various free versions of software also. I also downloaded Davinci Resolve but the graphics card in my laptop wasn't compatible, so I downloaded and used Lightworks to put together the Lake Anna video I posted a while ago. I liked the software but, didn't realize until I went to export my first video that I could only export in 720p with the free version. This leg d me to trying Shotcut. It is really basic and isn't nearly as powerful as some of the others but, it is really simple to use. It also requires less computer resources to run so was much faster on my laptop. For what you are wanting to do, it might be something you want to check out.
