Fixed Blade Broadhead

I have shot expandables for over 20 years but am switching to a fixed blade from slick trick this year since I will be hunting bear, I always liked the fact that my NAP expandables flew almost identical with my field points. I have not had a chance to shoot slick tricks yet. Any shared experience as to how they fly compared to field points?
If you're hunting black bear, the expandable would work. The larger cutting diameter helps to open a larger wound channel and give a better blood trail. The fall fat content in bears really stops a blood trail.

Expandable broadheads can't be beat (IMHO) on broadside shots. Most are not as good as cut on contact fixed blade broadheads on quartering shots. Expandable broadheads are no where near as good as a good fixed blade against bone.

I understand that certain areas don't allow expandable broadheads for bear. But I will use them again here in Wisconsin when I draw a bear tag again.

I use ram cat 125s and get pass through on hogs. Havent shot a deer with them yet but if they pass through a hog they will pass through a deer.

How do the ram cats hold up? Are they pretty much one and done or do they stay in good shape and able to be resharpened and reused?

I have had some that I could just resharpen and reuse and I’ve had some that I had to replace blades. My guess is 60% of the time I could resharpen and reuse. YMMV.

I love my g5 montecs killed everything with them from turkeys to a 950lb bull moose last season. If you are looking for a little bit bigger diameter the g5 strikers are a great head too.

Trying these old Ben Pearson Deadhead 777 heads this year's. 1-5/8" cut, and total weight will be 250grains with steel threaded insert.

I have 6 Iron Will broadheads and 6 tooth of the arrow broadheads. I haven't killed a deer with a bow in about 4 years...hopefully this year it will change. My quiver will have 3 iron will and 2 tooth of the arrow heads...and they hit in the exact same spot.

The IW heads are impressive. I killed four deer with the same head last year and just touched it up after every one. It's in the quiver now ready for more. The buck I killed in Ohio I shot through the heaviest part of the leg bone and through his heart and the arrow was stuck in the ground on the other side. Love them!

Good to know.

Has lack of a blood trail ever been an issue? I know that 2 blade wound-channels sometimes close up more easily depending on how the broadhead enters the animal.

I assume that the barbs/small blades on the sides of the Iron Will gives an additional cut?

Well I wish I could answer that, but all the deer I shot fell over in sight lol. The only one that didn't have blood on the ground was that buck I mentioned earlier. That was just because I shot through the heaviest part of his leg and the blood couldn't make it past all the muscle tissue. The others had pretty good blood on the ground but none of them went over 30 yards.

Personally I'm a fan of the G5 montecs they've always managed to get the job done for me. This year though I've been giving serious thought to switching to single bevel/kudu points.

In regards to blood trails: I tend to take the Ranch Fairy's advice he seems to know what he's talking about.

Are you shooting the vented or solid?

Ihave some dirt nap single bevels...they fly good, hit where the field points hit, and kill the heck out of armadillos.

Magnus buzzcuts fly really well, but blood trails havent been the greatest. They penetrate very well though. QAD Exodus are great but generally take more tuning. Better blood, but don't penetrate as much. I've been happy with both and would shoot either at an elk or whitetail

Wasp Drones for me. Not sure why I went to them but they are affordable, fly right, and are razor sharp. Oh, I guess that's why.

I shot mechanicals for years and never had a problem. I used them because I never bothered to tune my bow perfect. A few years ago I decided to learn how to tune my bow. Total game changer. Then I decided to take mechanicals out of the equation, figuring that it was smart to eliminate another possible point of failure. Fixed blades do not fail. Now it's all on me :)
