Game retrieval

My first buck ended up with a sizeable bare spot on his cape from a long drag over hard terrain. Taxidermist wanted to change capes, but I opted to stick with what I had hunted, shot, dragged...as a reminder of what it takes.

Yeah, I'm talking 75% bare lol. I grew up hunting and dragging near and on the Appalachian ridge, lotta rocks etc...

Getting them home whole is nice. Cleaner to deal with. The kids like to see the carcass. But in practice I pack most out.

I'll drag solo up to a half mile or so. If uphill is involved with a big buck, less. Downhill and flat drags aren't bad at all. It's going uphill that is killer.

With another guy or two to help, dragging isn't nearly as bad. When we're together for camp we'll drag one pretty far. A mile anyway, terrain dependent.

Carts are nice for paths or park-like woods. In deer woods forget it. A lot of places dragging to a path and carting makes sense though.

Don't have a lot of experience with sleds. On dry ground it seems dumb to me, but what do I know.

If it doesn't fall into one of the above categories, gutless method, gamebags, and frame pack is the answer. Not because I prefer it that necessarily, it's just the answer in some scenarios. Honestly, when it comes to rules over things like this, things that defy any ounce of common sense, I follow my north star. You say I have to bring it out whole, big brother? Sure, put it back together, be my guest!

Some of my nuisance tags have fallen in beans too thick to walk thru. I usually go get someone to help and cut a pole and carry out. It looks cool if nothing else. Otherwise I leave what I Can't eat.

If I’m grinding up a doe, I’ll pack her out like this… if it’s a large bodied animal, I’ll quarter and debone.

sleds are amazing in snow. They feel like the bottom is coated in tacky glue when going across wet grass. In the woods on dirt and leaves they work very well and help keep the Deer clean. Sleds also work fairly well on the dirt / sand / gravel of a skid road or other 2 track. Using one sure beats grinding the flesh off an animal if you have to drag it over a mile.

If I’m way back the MR Popup goes and I’ll quarter, otherwise I have a lightweight 4 wheel wheelbarrow similar to the pic I’ll attach. It runs great through the river bottoms and tall grass. I’ll hike back and drop my gear and grab it after I’ve gutted, dropped a pin on the map.

We have a jet sled at the farm with quads but we have wider trails. On public I’ll often use and old sledding sled from when I was a kid. A lot skinnier than a jet sled so if often gets through skinnier trails, or just drag it.

This is offensive! Sorry bro most of us CANNOT DO THAT! Your a straight up bad azz! I have thrown a small hog over my shoulder and carried her out, ONCE! Does that make me a little bad azz?
Here in GA on public land, I am not dragging anything. I have gotten to where I don’t even want my game hung up. On the ground, do one side, flip, do other side. I NEVER open the inside except a hole just big enough behind last rib to get my hand on the inner loins.
I’ve been quartering and packing out. My next step is to spend a little more time and debone as well…..not sure why I’m carrying bones.

There are a ton of videos how to get it done. Warren Womack has a great one, but this is the best one I’ve seen. He’ll show you how to go through and separate the front knee as well…..it jacked up on me, but it is Chris Sikes

So none of y’all save the hide? I should start a hide preservation operation.

I’ve started seeing some of his traditional archery hunting videos lately. He’s got a good channel. The way he handles the quarters by leaving some hair on to help the grip will make a big difference for me. My hand is usually about cramping by the time I get done cutting all the quarters off because I’m having to squeeze so hard so it doesn’t slip right out. Thanks for sharing.
