Gear you liked/disliked 2023

It’s a bit smaller and has the plastic clips to attach to molle loops instead of the compression straps like the Sherman Pocket. I’ve included a side by side with the Sherman Pocket. I carry my knee pads and my three step aider in the Shape Charge pocket. Perhaps they no longer make it?

They no longer make the shape charge pocket.

I think they don’t. I used the shape charge for part of the season both one sticking (EWO) and two sticking (2ONE sticks/predator) and @Cbigbear stick talons. Used the Sherman inside and as the pack I pulled up the tree (binos, calls, gloves/beanie, snacks). Kifaru for me by a mile! Tried almost all the others to include custom packs, but I’ve stopped looking now! Wish I had stock

Well I’ll start with a 50/50 like /dislike. The proximity set. It has a great lay out for pockets, really quiet and packs down nice. Warm with the right layers and no wind. The Meg and pitbzips are nice. On the flip. The wind comes right through and you will freeze to death. The dwr treatment doesn’t work long.

Likes:
XOP retrograde. Absolutely a game changer and surprisingly comfortable for its size. Many all
Day sits and it’s nothing to set up.

Under armour ridge ripper set with gore winstopper. Bought combat the wind through the proximity because the pros outweighed the cons. It fits great really quiet for a soft shell, warm and the pants are great fleece lined, padded knees without bulk and hip vents.

Lathrop and sons mountain hunter elite boots. Best boots I’ve ever had. No pain to my ankle with the plate, rocker sole helps with gate, no leaks and perfect balance of stiff and flex.

Dislike:
Hawk ARC umbrella. It’s heavy and awkward and to curved and blocks vision if not set up high enough but to high rain gets in.

Econo game bags from sportsman’s warehouse. They keep the dirt and leaves off but lack some
Structure to keep the meat compact and prevent from coming out the sided of the meat shelf.

Agree on Lathrop and Sons. I didn’t mention in my Like/Dislike post, but my L&S MTN hunter warm boots have been super too. Some at Rokslide hate on their custom orthotics, I don’t know why, they’ve been absolutely the bees knees. Can’t imagine a more comfortable boot.

I got the synergy foot beds also. I love these things. The rocker sole is awesome.

The only things new I added this year were a dedicated blood trailing light that I'm very pleased with and a new pair of hunt boots.

The light is a coast hp4 high cri penlight. I learned about these high cri lights here off SH in the blood trailing light thread. It's only a hundred lumens but it blows my 400 lumen headlamp out of the water for finding blood in the dark. I'm very happy with it.

The boots are something new to me I learned about here on SH in the minimalist boot thread. I'd never heard of these barefoot style shoes before and it caught my interest enough for me to research some stuff....I also had a issue the last year I needed to address. The year prior we had 1 real cold day here and my feet were freezing because of the sweat inside my rubber boot. I ended up taking my shoes off and my feet got warmer so that got me thinking I need to find a non waterproof ( every waterproof shoe I've ever owned made my foots sweat) shoe that is gonna dry out real fast. After looking around on the webs and reading I bought the belleville mini mil. It's like a desert/jungle boot that has short dry time and is also a barefoot style shoe. They are great. The trade off is having wet shoe for a while but they are so nice for long walks and stalking....the soles are flexible enough u can "feel" and get less stick cracks. Real lightweight. They run real wide which is good for me cause I got real wide clodhoppers. They may not be for folks who stand the edge of metal platforms however....HOWEVER, the sole started to separate on the right shoe.....BUT....they sent me a new pair no cost because they fell within the year warranty. I repaired the originals so now I got 2 pairs. They a little too pricey for what they are but for warm climate "run & gun" style hunting I like them very much. Added some of those boot covers for the cold days but have t had a chance to test in the hunt woods. I tested the combo in the backyard on a couple of our rare near freezing nights in the backyard and I think the boot/cover combo should work well.

And here's the kicker.....I've had a pair of tingly/Yoder for couple years and they shrank I guess from the heat in the bed of the truck? So I got a replacement pair and sat on them for a while cause I wanted to get more use outta my original pair. I noticed the the boot had been "updated" since buying the first pair. It was the same shoe but with slight changes. No big deal I thought....fast forward a little and the original pair is just too constrictive and I found a person who fit them so I gave them away and brought out the new pair. The new pair is the same size as the old pair but they are larger for some reason and I got heel movement in the new pair. 2 pairs of thick socks and it stops the heel slip but it's 90 dang degrees most of the hunting season so I guess I bite the bullet and get another pair 1 size smaller and hope for the best and maybe I can sell the big pair I hope to recoup a little from that hit....I dislike that

Swapped my 8mm to tether and 11mm to lineman’s like I threatened to do; man, so much better. My fingers are happier when I climb and my dump pouch and stopwatch are happier when I setup/tear down. Also, the RM1 was not really my thing on a tether but it’s A1-A on the lineman’s. Seriously, almost 5 years in the saddle and I just now figgered this out.

Dislike:
This pains me to say, because I really enjoy gutting deer with it, but I’m starting to get exhausted by my Outdoor Edge Flip ‘n Zip. It’s hella sharp, easy to resharpen, packs great, works easily…but it is a major PITA to clean. I have gutted three FAT deer (like literally fat, filled with white gobs and grease) and cleaning that crap out of the hinge and inner channels of the handle makes me question my sanity. I love the zipper blade portion especially, but I may try a set of OE fixed blades instead.

I don’t have the Flip n zip but have a replaceable blade outdoor edge. It can be a pain to clean also. Easiest way I have found is let it sit overnight submerged in a little hot soapy water. The next morning most of it rinses out and a quick scrub with an old toothbrush and it’s clean.

I do mine the same way, I like always having a sharp blade at a minutes disposal, so the replacement blades are nice! Razor sharp too!

Came here to say this too. Only variation is that I use one of those dishwasher pods instead of dawn liquid. Works well!

Yeah, I do that. My real issue is my own laziness, and forgetting that thing is still sitting in the dishwater like, a week or more after a kill. It’s not the knife’s fault, it’s mine. I dread cleaning it the next day so I kinda intentionally forget to do it, then I have to deal with nasty water afterwards and messy mechanics. I think the folder fits my packability criteria, but the fixed blades fit my cleaning criteria.

I looked in to those fixed blade and noticed it wasn't the same steel as the flip and zip. Mine really holds and edge well and I was afraid the fixed blade might not.
