Getting learnt with Dr. Ed Ashby

Anybody try an expandable with a 600+ total arrow weight? All I hear about is that 350 grain with expandables won't pass through, but never hear about anybody trying them with a heavy arrow. Sure they won't do as good when hitting bone, but they should punch 2 holes on a good shot.

Part of the equation is the FOC%. Its not just about a heavier arrow. I suppose you could add insert weight to an expandable and improve FOC, but it isnt just about a heavy arrow.

I have shot both the original rage (o-ring blade retainer) and the 1.5" +P Rages at just over 600 grains. It was not the answer. Penetration was still poor .... better but still poor.

Expandables punch two holes on good hits most of the time, and I'm sure if you increase arrow total weight FoC, you'd see more pass throughs, and maybe less deflections of arrow path. What wouldn't change is the energy dump needed to deploy the head, resulting in the slap at impact, and the fact that expandables are not built solid enough to maintain their integrity. I hit one rib on the buck I shot this year and it bent the blades, and that could result in the arrow changing it's path. Plus you lose the insurance factor. I did think of this as well as I thought about building better arrows, but I like the idea of more solid components from tip to tail, and with that thought in mind will use fixed CoC heads, and remove all aluminum from my arrows. #1 arrow integrity.

My set up this year was 578 and I had a set of G5 Deadmeat broadheads as back ups in the quiver or for a change of luck. Basically if I have a few sits where I don't see anything I switch arrows to change my luck. It "worked" I shot my buck with the G5 and it was a complete pass through and stuck into the ground about 6 inches (22 yard shot quartering away). it hit ribs and 2 of the 3 blades broke off in the deer. My exit hole looked like a .410 slug entry hole. Was it because of the heavy arrow and 18%FOC not a clue. I do not think I would have had an issue blowing through him with a 450 arrow to be honest. I hit him top third of the body 6 or 7 ribs back an exited out the bottom in front of opposite front leg.

Don't think I will use expendables again though. I have had to many break. The year before I had a 530 ish arrow with a grim reaper and 2 blades broke off also. I am not a fan of gutting a deer and not know with I am going to catch myself on a piece of broadhead.

I want hot knife through butter not punching a whole and then cutting. My animals killed with a magnus buzzcut have reacted a lot less then shooting with an expandable.

Just switched my setup to a 528 grain setup this year (FMJ plus 125 grain head and lighted nock). And I can already tell that the absolute maximum I am willing to go is 550 grains. My pin gap is already absolutely atrocious and I will not sacrifice any more trajectory. I already have enough momentum/KE to hunt the largest legal game in the US and to make any angle shot I want on a whitetail from anywhere on this planet. I draw the line. The only thing I MIGHT try are those Kudupoint broadheads. I am an expandable guy (Sevr) but those Kudupoints have my attention if they will fly field point accurate.

Did y'all listen to the video? They couldn't push expandable through elk hide by hand. If that's the case just imagine how much energy/momentum/kinetic energy/go juice you lose just from the initial impact.

That’s an elk. I have never hunted anything larger than a whitetail. Eventually the trade off isn’t worth the effort.

Not sure where your at but if you hunt pigs better to be overgunned than under. We have big hogs and I wanna kill the almost more than whitetail

Watch how little the difference is in arrow drop from 100gr to 315gr points. 125gr to 200gr is only about an inch at 35 yards. Increasing FOC % has a large influence on arrow drop. You can shoot a heavier arrow which will shoot quieter and penetrate better and shoot the same trajectory.
