Ghillie Suite

There are a number of great Ghillie threads on here over the past few years.
Its been one of my winter projects.
@DaveT1963 and @NMSbowhunter are on a solid path with a inexpensive / effective/ easy to pack method with a “Ghillie boonie/ cape.”
I made a DaveT one that weighs under a pound.
The @Red Beard / @KYHunter viper hoods posted on here are also bad a$$, but when you add all the cost of building one , It’s likely easier to get a quality premade leafy or ghillie .
Most of the better Cult-ish ghillies are no longer produced( bush in bag, underbrush, bushrag)
ill post a follow up after some real woods experience

* my example has not killed a deer. stay tuned

how much did yours cost?

Following. I was planning on buying a ghillie suit for this year but those kill suits look the part and possibly without all the shedding and picking up half the woods on the hunt? Definitely has my eye
They still snag but but I don't know of any that don't. They dont really shed at all. I just pack in and put on at my hunting spot. They're super light weight and pack down pretty small. I like the sapper because it's a long coat without the pants. It hangs down about mid shin when walking and slightly higher when sitting and I'm right at about 6' and have the XL/2XL.
The woodland camo one I have made by Red Rock, I'll just wear the jacket top and hat since stuff is green and growing it'll usually cover my legs up to my knees when sitting.
For a cheaper trial run and just to see if you want to try out a ghillie, I seriously suggest trying the camo netting with a head hole cut out and a leafy hat. My dad killed many deer this way after refusing to climb a tree after a serious fall. I've tried this too and the options are infinitely customizable and you don't feel as bad cutting up netting rather than an actual ghillie suit if it doesn't work for ya.

$20 for a “scout” boonie ( has the netting attached on top) eBay or Amazon ( it’s great for making a Ghillie but is rip stop cotton and comes with a pocket to store an extra face mask/ handkerchief in and will be hot for early season/ murder if in the south
$10 Ghillie netting Amazon- enough to make 3-4 boonies
$18 Ghillie jute - I went with Mossy , this is tan, brown and mossy green , enough to make 4 boonie ghillies. I bought way too much.
Also best to buy individual colors as I separated stands to make it less dark/ blob.
I had some extra garden twine which is just natural jute rope and some burlap ; call it $5
So call a finished boonie cape $30
Or if you get a boonie I’ll make you one, it’s fun as my daughters like to pitch in.

A viper was around $40 to my door without all the fixins

In hindsight, if you get a boonie or already have one, just tie burlap/ leafy material to the existing loops and you’re in it:

Forgot to mention in the video that the top itself has a plethora of adjustment points (across chest, across back, at each armpit, and at each sleeve cuff).

Hoods are made to correspond with your handedness. Bow arm has material but the inner arm/bicep area is free of material so that it doesn't interfere with your bow string. If you plan on rifle only hunting or hunting with a Hickory Creek, I can make it with material on both arms.

The one pictured below is my personal hood (I'm a lefty). The last picture is for reference - multicam vs woodland

Nice rig. Definitely something to consider looks like I’ll be getting one soon too. After I see Arts’.

I actually went boonie over viper as I didn’t want to turn my head to look at the inside of my hood like some commercial ghillies. Cool how you thought of that and left the front open.

Got the new Viper hood from @Red Beard today and I gotta say this thing is sweet. Fast as all get up too. Had it in a week from time of order. Great guy to deal with. This will definitely be with me this fall and will get run through the ringer in a few weeks when spring gobbler season opens up. Looking forward to doing a little stalking this fall and ground setups as well as hanging from my saddle. Another tool in the arsenal and this one will definitely be getting some use. Thanks again Red Beard, looking forward to posting pics this fall

I have been an ASAT camo user for many, many years.
Their leafy suit (ghillie) is the best in my estimation.
I have had a coyote @ 5 yds. looking right through me, with deer and turkeys just as close, the wind was perfect for all encounters.
The suit it self is mesh based, so it can be used in all temperature ranges.
It is not the "standard" camo trying to replicate existing flora and fauna.
Deer are not camoed but notice how hard they are to see at times when they are still.
