Had two solid days to hunt the 6th and 7th with an all day sit Saturday and a half day Sunday morning.

Setup on a high flat top ridge, in a saddle. I took my saddle up there and found my first tree after walking in about a mile. Setup and saw this guy cruising. Completely unresponsive to grunts, rattling and even a snort wheeze. He was just out of my comfortable range at 43 yards.

I watched where he went and setup over the trail he used.

Saw him again Saturday evening and didn’t have a shot.

I hunted the same tree Sunday and he came by at about 50 yards and this time he went by but came back in when I snort wheezed at him.

Shot him in his right shoulder, slightly quartering away at 32 yards. Which is 2 yards over what I typically limit myself to. I felt confident in this shot because he was alert but unaware of my own presence.

I shot him through the scapula on the right side at a steep downward angle, penetrating the lungs and out his left side low, toward his “elbow”.

The deer left out hauling the mail and not leaving a drop of blood to track by, which I attribute to my arrow still being in the wound.

I tracked for about 50 yards and finding no blood decided to back out and wait. I did the prudent thing and called a dog and waited 7 hours. Needless to say I was on pins and needles the entire time.

We climbed back up the ridge and cut a couple half moons trying to cut sign or find the trail and after about 15 minutes the dog had the trail and took us straight to the deer. I stayed back and looked for blood and never found it, even with the lower side wound on the exit. I still chalk that up to the arrow being inside the wound with both ends broken off. But nonetheless, a happy ending to the story. Having made three strategic moves to get on this deer really paid off and highlights the importance of the mobility I’ve adopted in my hunting style.

I’d say the deer was dead within a minute but I know deep down that backing out and waiting was the smarter thing to do without a full pass through and with no blood to go on.

Awesome deer with a great story! How far do you think he ran before he expired? A few years ago I called a tracking dog for a liver hit, and the dog found the deer inside 100 yards in a matter of minutes. Was amazing to see the dog work. Do you know what kind of dog that is? Looks like a lab mix of some kind.

I’m not 100% on what she is at all. She looks like a good dog to me. That’s all I knew. The deer actually ran a grand total of about 150-160 yards max. Down hill. He really only bled on the inside.

I was around 25 feet up and he was down wind of me. Like directly down wind. I take scent showers, ozone treat, spray down and use this stuff called camo dust. Honestly, I don’t know if any of it works but it worked this time!

Amazing what the dogs can do that we can't. Good on you for doing the right thing and calling for help. More guys than would like to admit would simply have said "didn't find any blood, must not have been a good hit" and went home.

I was lucky in the sense that I did most things right and as soon as he ran I got my bow hung up and got my binos on him and could see right away that while I didn’t have full penetration, I did have deep enough to get the broadhead through the offside. And having access to a good dog sure didn’t hurt.

Congrats and what an experience for you! The buck I shot Friday night also left little to no blood, but ran maybe 40 yards from where I hit him.

Nice buck! And great story.

I had a similar encounter Thursday after I moved to a bench I saw a big buck out of range, for the evening and had him come in hot for a grunt.
The difference is I missed. (Sigh)

Heck yeah! How did you get ahold of a tracker? If I remember correctly you are in Missouri?

What gear did you use to take him? Bow, poundage, arrow, broad head etc. Congrats on a nice buck.
On this one I used my 60 pound Parker bow. 640 grain TAW gold tip with an ozcut knockoff Amazon broadhead. 150 grain broadhead and 150 grain brass insert. The head was sharp but I hit bone on entrance and exit and with the shot being 32 yards, and the lower poundage I’m not super shocked that I didn’t get a full pass through.
