Im late to the party but in my opinion it all depends on the time of the year. Ive tried early season and scared them away but if its rut and they are paired up and i try it i think it gets them going.

I've had one young buck come into my grunts. He started headed my way and looped around staying 150-200 yards out until he was downwind and eventually winded me.

I have called in or been calling when ive shot the majority of my bow bucks. I killed a flamboyant one in 2002 that growled and roared long before that call ever came out. Guess i shouldve been more entrepreneurial!
Cold calling works great on 2yr olds in my experience but only seem to have success on older bucks if i see them first. I will also say that some yrs the grunt seems to work well and some yrs it doesnt. Weird

10/17, I had a buck rubbing up trees about 35-40 yards away. I waited for him to stop and then grunted. He looked back my way for a few seconds and went back to rubbing. When he stopped again I grunted again. He stared for a few seconds then turned and came to 15 yards. He's in my freezer now. In my experience, it all depends on their attitude. He was feeling aggressive right then. He was also one of the only mature deer on the property and I was in his bedroom. He was going to whoop up on whatever buck he could find.
