Gutting a deer...

You can get the heart without gutting. Just make an incision at the base of the sternum and slit the diaphragm muscle. Heart is just on the other side. It's not bad at all
One of these days I may try that. It just hasnt been high on my priority list. Used to have an uncle that always wanted the liver and heart. I usually gutted a couple a year to hook him up with some organs. Otherwise I aint messin with them inards.

I used to think the same thing about the innards. One year, I thought about the heart as another muscle. I took the mental challenge and took the heart..cut it lengthwise and cut out all the connective tissue. I was very pleasantly surprised.

Consider yourself lucky. I cut my thumb tendon gutting a deer. Read all about it here: https://saddlehunter.com/community/index.php?threads/another-safety-reminder.31224/. Had to have surgery, a splint for 2 months, and now I'm going through PT. My thumb is just getting to be useful again....its my left one so I was still able to hunt. But, I have ptsd each time I field dress a deer now!

I cut a tendon butchering a cow. No dr. No pt. Took about 2 years to get motion back fully, then this year I shoved a 1/4" Drill bit into that joint, but from the other side... back to square 1
