Gutting a deer...

Go slow with the knife when your other hand is in the cavity. I guess you'll remember this on the next 40 deer..

No doubt. Stitches hurt worse than the cut.
And I was using my backup knife which has a different shape.
Lesson learned.

Stocking stuffer ideas .

I’ll take them out myself.

I always take mine out too, but one time took them out too early. Took 17 stitches out of my forearm and the next day went on a canoe trip. Hoisted that canoe up on my shoulders and promptly ruptured that 2.5-3" wound back up. No going back, so grabbed the duct tape and taped it shut. Who needs stitches when you got duct tape??

Superglue. Works like a champion.

Dang....I guess I need to put some duct tape in my pack. How do these guys get away with these small packs??? Haha.

I told my wife (after she told me not to come back without glue or stitches), “well it should heal faster so I can shoot my bow”. The look I got was priceless

Super glue is the way to go. Trust me.

I did the same this year clearing brush with a pocket saw. Four stitches same. Debated the superglue...decided against it.

get a pencil (or equivalent) and wrap some duct tape around it. at least enough to stitch yourself up. don't pack a whole roll.

Dont yall use camo vet tape for everything? Throw a roll in your IFAK. Really light weight compared to duct tape. No residue either. Glad it wasent worse for you guys. Stay safe out there boys!!!

I took a puck to the face one time and had 7 stitches across my cheek. I took them out, walked from the bathroom to the living room and sat down. My daughter climbed up on my knee and promptly head butted me right across the scar. Opened it right back up. I just butterflied it back together. :tearsofjoy:

Edit: and for the OP, don't feel bad you're certainly not alone. I had hit one badly one year and tracked it about a mile and a half before finally catching and finishing it. While gutting it I sliced my left thumb. I swear I left a better blood trail back to where I'd stashed my gear than I had been following all morning.

I had killed a wild pig and my buddy came over to help get it parted out. It was hot and we were working on it at the same time. I was skinning around one of the front legs while he was holding the other and my knife slipped cutting that tough hide and heard a loud click as my buddy jerked his hand back. I thought he was joking around as he was holding his hand but when I asked him to see it he says “NO!!”
No first aide kit just water, blue shop towel and duct tape! He comes back over to help finish and I ask how bad and he says “ you heard it hit bone” so I feel bad and all but then I start saying ......
“Trichinosis, trichinosis, trichinosis!!”
The look on his face was priceless
