Hand climber

Why don’t you have to adjust the Summit cables as much as the LW strap? Wouldn’t you have to adjust both of them the same amount?

I am coming up on the replacement date for my XOP handclimber strap. Has anyone done the Summit strap replacement described in this thread? How do you like it compared to the original straps? I am thinking it may be worth while since I have to buy new straps anyway.

I have two LoneWolf climbers and two Summits.
The Summit straps have that thin plastic coating that wears off. When it does they are super noisy...

Thanks phatkaw. The Summit conversion also looks to be more cumbersome for adjusting the stand angle while climbing. Two strikes.

I converted a summit hand climber and used it for a while. I just didn't like the cables. They were stiff to adjust in the cold, and noisy. The standing area was similar to the mission which made it very comfortable. Was very stable on the tree. It weighed around 7 pounds. It's time for the Trophyline, Tethrd, and the rest to embrace and perfect the saddle hand climber.

Looks like XOP no longer supplies a belt for this climber. Just ordered one from LW.

Not sure how I missed this thread years ago but I sure am glad it’s alive.

I just got two summit cables from Amazon for $32 delivered. Modifications to follow.

Tethrd, Trophyline, OOAL, whoever, it’s time to embrace the saddle climber platform. Barren Ridge has already made some good ones. Would be nice to have several options. Something with welded tubing and not cast. I sold the one I made from a summit hand climber and later regretted it. Now I can’t get ahold of another hand climber section without buying a whole stand to make me a new one. This is definitely an overlooked niche in saddle hunting.

A couple of things I did to my summit that helped tremendously. Filing slopes on the edges of the square tubing ends helps smooth cable entry and filling those stamps with JB weld keeps the cable swedges from hanging up and keeps it from chewing up the shrink wrap on the cables. Both items help cut down on the noise. E7438415-CF50-460B-8F93-4343E91A1083.jpeg

will keep these mods in mind if I get to build another.

Ya got a finished product pic?

Just so you know, your Summit HC is still getting used a lot! I use it with just my saddle and as a foot piece with the Viper top as an ultra light climber at times, too. It's the best thing I've purchased on the site in all these years.

Before and after pics. The cable swedges bang up against those square tubing ends when you slide the cables in.

Sloping the edges of the tubing helps guide the swedges into the tubing

The swedges also hit and hang up in those press divots and it chews up the shrink wrap

With the press diviots filled with JB weld the cables just slide right in. Only takes a few minutes to fill them in.

Those press divots chew up the shrink wrap and then you have metal on metal contact when you shove the cables into the tubing, creating a lot of noise.

Above and beyond! Thank you.

I’m glad you’re still using and enjoying it. At some point I will either buy or build another.

Thanks for sharing. I am going to borrow these mods from you since both of the issues you mentioned regarding the cable have been frustrating.

Those definitely help, especially filling that press divot. Those swedges really want to dig into that divot due to downward bending motion that you put on the cable to insert it.16E9897E-D75C-42BE-96DA-68FDF7EE9147.jpeg
Edit: Just had a thought. If you fill in that press divot, then build up that area in the front of the bottom part of that tubing to level that front edge off and out past that rivet with JB weld almost all the snags would be gone and that cable would just slide right in real slick.

I would file that rivet down a bit and build a ramp in that yellow area

I think you’re right. I had a Summit goliath for years and really didn’t have an issue. Not sure what the difference is, but my open shot is much more difficult to thread the swedge in and out of.
