Hand climber

Yeah I'm pretty much using this set up exclusively now.

The only thing I want to do is add grip tape to it. I hunted in a down pour the other day and noticed it was a little slippery on my rubber boots. I'm still trying to work my method of adjusting straps on the way up. Had a PITA moment the other night adjusting on the descent and the climber dropped getting wedged against the tree. Had to do some shimmiing to pull it back up to me.

Since modifying my hand climber to use a summit cable I haven’t had to adjust on the way up I just set it tight at the base so it levels out at hunting height

Are you still using this to climb? Would like to see a video. I have a hand climber top I might do as you did. Seems like it solved the pita adjustments.

I would tie the hand climber to your harness so of it falls you can just pull it back up, that's what I've been doing anyway and it works well, I have a strap with a loop on each end, one goes in the foot strap and one in my tether carabiner that's connected to my harness.

Also I dont think the adjustments are really a pain, i use it as a chance to move it up pretty high then pull myself up, I put my knees on the edge(knee pads are nice for this) then grab my prusik loop with both hands and pull myself up.

Yeah it's always attached to my kestrel with 8mm cord. Couldn't pull it up after it wedged against the tree.

Ahhh I've had it get stuck like that but never anything that I couldn't fix with a little finesse, that's interesting, now it'll happen the next time I hunt.

@FayetteKong Awesome build! It’s exactly what I’ve been trying to figure out. I always used Summit Climbers and am sure it will out climb LW or XOP blindfolded. Thanks again.

So I have a sit and climb LW, wondering if you guys find opening the cable latch a real pain when your fingers are cold? Thinking my belt needs some silicon spray or something to make this easier. I want to look at getting a hand climber, but dealing with those cam locks for the belt sucks. I have the little string tied to them to aid, but still tough. The summit cable upgrade is clever, those usually come with shrink wrap coating to minimize noise.

LW cams are super tight XOP not at all.

I’ve had to take my foot and kick the strap once in a while if it gets stuck.

I had a good one this morning, it's raining and wet and I may have found one thing I don't like about this climbing method, you have to touch the tree, lol, my gloves were soaked by the time I got set up. I got hunt up on a knot on the back side of the tree, also the tree had a small thick spot so it was a little tighter than normal, I had already moved up my tether and tightened it, and being lazy, I just fiddled with it til I got it, but it took some effort.

I had a hunt in the rain not long ago. I was using WE steps, but same deal my gloves were soaked and hands were instantly cold. Thinking I'll start bringing an extra pair of gloves for this reason.

That's what I did had 4 pairs at one point and they were all wet when I got done and I was still cold, I need a waterproof outer shell or something that's tough and doesn't get ripped up on the first tree.

@FayetteKong if I am looking at this right you are using the summit cables that have a cylinder shaped detent every few inches. Then you are putting a pin through the tubing blocking the detent from pulling out? I may have to give this a try. I have an old summit in the barn so it would be an inexpensive project. The belt hanging on the bark is about the most annoying thing about climbing with it.
