Helium Stick Modification - a closer look

Is there a way to mod these to swivel the V bases?

I think so, but machining would be required. I tried putting a washer between the v bracket and the stick and it swiveled, but put a huge bending moment on the bolts. The Lw v brackets have a larger "flat" area to eliminate the bending moment. I decided after some use it wasnt needed, but I haven't climbed any snakey trees.

You could probably grind off the lips on the Helium brackets so it is flat that would allow it to swivel. Not sure there is any real reason to do this?

Do you think you could use the muddy cam/rope system on this stick instead of the versa button ?

Dont have a muddy stick to see how it mounts. Unless you already have the muddy sticks to swipe the system from, its likely expensive to buy. The versa button is cheap, light weight, and works great. Plus there is already a hole to mount it, easy mod.

So the existing hole for the strap bracket will work for the versa button?

Can someone post a link to the rope that you're using? Thanks.

You have to re-drill the hole slightly bigger to accept the bolt for the versa button.

I didn't have to re-drill my holes at all.... All I did was swap out the hardware.
Easy Peasy

I sue 1/4 inch amsteel blue for my sticks - I get it from Sampson ropes I believe (I bought it in bulk several years ago so I am not really sure at this point). I just googled it until I found the right price and usually look for someone that will sale it in the length I want or by the foot.

Do the lone wolf versa buttons come with all the needed hardware to add them to the Helium sticks?

They do, but the the sticks will not nest together with them. The old versa buttons had the head of the screw sit inside the versa button, but now it sits on top of it so that when put on the helium sticks it won't sit together right. You will have to do extra mods to make it work, and I'm still up in the air on the best way to hang these sticks. For me that project is on hold at the moment.

Actually it is not that hard to do. Get a computer mouse pad (thick is better) or any kind of foam or rubber pad for that matter. cut two squares about 1 inch by 1 inch. Glue the first square on the underside of top stick where you the versa button screw head to touch. Now take a second piece, cut it the same size as first piece. Drill a hole (size of versa button screw head) right in the center and glue that to first pad. If your pad isn't thick enough use three squares.... problem solved.

I am a noob to saddle hunting, first time out will be this fall. Also, I know that this thread is somewhat old. I was wondering if there is a substantial advantage to this helium stick mod vs. buying the Muddy Pro Sticks (http://shop.gomuddy.com/the-pro-climbing-sticks/). If I understood these mods properly, the result is a 21" long stick with 2 holds and a rope attachment system that weighs 2 lbs 3 oz each section. Muddy advertises their sticks that come with the rope attachment system as being 21" and 2 lbs 8 oz. Other than the 5 oz per stick, is there a significant advantage to this mod?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Warmly,
Eric
