Hi guys, new member from Central VA

Yeah, I'm sure he is swamped. I just wanted to be sure I did it right.

So I'll just throw this out here and maybe y'all can answer.

So for someone who has never done this before, could you list out a “must have” and a “nice to have” list so I can cover all my bases on an order?

For example is 1 sys bag enough or do I really need two, ropeman nice to have or really a must have and if so how many? How many carabiners are really needed etc.

He is super swamped with his day job as well, lots of stuff going on in poor Greg’s life.

As far as “stuff” I would definitely go with 2 say haulers. I typically use one pocket for my tether, and one for my linesman belt.
Ropeman1’s are a HUGE benefit and once you use them, you will never go back. But, if all that money at once is a barrier the ropeman, you can use a standard prussic knot for the first season or so.

My list of minimum basics would be as follows....

Saddle
Linesman belt
Tether
Climbing method
Platform (an actual platform, or ring of steps, top of sticks, Wild Edge stepps... whatever)

The 2 sys haulers would super simplify your ascent. Both ropes you need would be right at hand, and with little bulk, instead of having them in your pack or hanging from the saddle.
Same thing with the Ropeman1’s, they allow for one handed adjustment of those ropes whereas the prussic typically requires both hands. Using both hands while climbing can often times be precarious, or uncomfortable.

Both the sys haulers and the ropeman1’s would probably be in the “nice to have” category, but they do make a HUGE difference in how easy your climb is.

Thanks @IkemanTX! I have been reading on the Ropeman and apparently I still need a prussic along with it somehow to be safe??

There is some argument about that. Some guys don’t feel safe with a mechanical devise being their only lifeline, some guys do.
I personally don’t use a backup for the ropeman. I know most guys don’t either.

I worry the knee pads wont be comfortable. Do they bother you wearing them all day? Ive only ever worn them while working and I sweat so much in them and the straps dig into my legs and get uncomfortable. Maybe its different up in a tree just hanging out. I thought about strapping a seat pad to the tree in front of me and just putting my knees into that.
@vabwhntr it's never really bothered me, sometimes I put them on before I walk in, but most times I keep them in my back pack and put them on before I climb, you're sitting still in the tree so I never had any problem with them being too hot

welcome to the site
Thanks, I'm really enjoying it. Can't even count the number of times I come here every day. ;-) I used to live to hunt, but a few years back I seemed to lose my motivation and drive for it. Last season my drive to get in the woods started coming back and I'm already super pumped for this season. A lot of that is all the energy on this site and my excitement to try out my new Mantis and Predator.

I just joined yesterday. Saw saddles a few years back and just sort of laughed and assumed they would be really uncomfortable and I really like having something solid under my feet. I have been hunting for years out of a Summit Vipre and love the comfort and stability. I am getting really tired of humping it in and out of the woods and a lot of times that limits how far I'm willing to go.

I have been obsessively reading and watching everything I can on saddles since someone mentioned them in a FB post yesterday. I can't believe I'm actually considering pulling the trigger on one. Never thought I would ever consider it before. ;-)

Welcome from Wilmington Ma. Waiting for my Mantis . No doubt this is the place to learn anything and everything about saddle hunting.
