How many deer have you killed?

How old you are: 29
When you started: 10ish.. I'd say I didn't actually start hunting hunting til I was 24
How many seasons: Due to college and getting grounded from hunting 1 year in high school (long story :tearsofjoy:) I'd say no more than 14 years
Where you generally hunt: 100% Maryland up to this point
And how many deer you've kilt! 17, 14 in the last 4 years including all 4 bucks

4 antlered, 13 antlerless
4 private (1 antlered), 13 public (3 antlered)
1 rifle, 4 shotgun (1 antlered), 12 archery (3 antlered)

Hopefully the pace of the last 4 years is the trend that continues

Age: 44
Started: 42
Seasons: 3
Where: MA, NH, VT
Dead deer: 2, both with compound, both from climber

Another AOH here. Grew up wandering the woods, but never hunted until I decided I wanted to learn how to bow hunt a couple years ago. Read Eberhart and Infalt, and had a friend who showed me the ropes. Killed first deer on my 3rd sit ever - little 6 point on private land with a 25 year old PSE bow my father in law gave me.

I passed a whole bunch of does and a couple small bucks later that first year since I kept seeing bigger bucks just out of range and didn't want to burn my 2nd tag. Also saw a couple nice deer also just out of range in NH and VT, and passed on a good number of does. Did manage to shoot a turkey with a bow on a spot and stalk that first spring too... I was worried that I'd shot my wad with every bit of hunting luck I'd ever have in the first 6 months of starting.

2nd year I shot a nice 8 pt on public land, after passing on a lot of does and small bucks. Only got to hunt 8-10 times that year due to family and work.

Last year I never took a shot - I was completely focused on a giant 12 pt I had mostly patterned on private, and so I repeatedly passed on a few 1.5 and 2.5 year old bucks. Never saw the giant from the stand, but I learned a lot. In retrospect, I should have taken the chip shot on the nice 8 pt I grunted in on public land (in my sit-drag!), but I was more than a mile in and honestly didn't want to spend all night getting it out unless it was one I couldn't pass up.

Anyway, part of my point with all this is that thanks to this site, the hunting beast, and THP - it's amazing how short one can make the learning curve if you put the time in reading and watching. If I'd gone out and tried to sit field edges or some other tactics from TV shows that used to be the way newbies "learned", I'd likely still have never killed a deer.

How old you are: 59

When you started: 1976

How many seasons: 42

Where you're from/where you generally hunt: Central NC

And how many deer you've kilt! At least 40 with traditional bow...30+ with compound and prolly 40+ with gun...

I don't want to turn this into a competition, but I'm really curious.

I just added every one I can remember up and so far I'm at an even 20. For a broke 25 year old I'm not too disappointed, but I definitely want that number to go up. Of course, I killed my first when I was maybe 7? So I'd like to think I neglected a doe or two. Sometimes mine and my dad's kills run together too since we hunt so much and I clean the majority of his deer lately. But I know for sure I've accounted for 20.

Let me know:

This might be a fun summer post!

I'm 23. Started hunting in 2017. 2 seasons under my belt so far and I hunted 100+ days both of those seasons (NJ archery season runs from mid September- mid February). I've hunted at least a dozen different pieces of public land all over the state. I shot my first deer like a week into my first season and wasn't able to recover her. A couple weeks later I lucked into a nice buck while walking in for an evening hunt and killed him from the ground at 5 yards. I remember thinking wow this bow hunting thing is TOO EASY! I then spent the next 4 and a half months struggling to get a deer within bow range lol. This past season I killed a doe early on and decided to hold out for something big. I got my chance on New year's Eve and sent an arrow under the belly of a massive old 6 point swamp monster. Then I killed a button buck the last week of season. Can't wait to get back in the woods with a bow in my hand.

I have a book that I've kept since my first deer, it has date, time, deer sex, weapon used, location and a comment section that describes yardage and what the deer was doing. I.e. buck chasing a doe, or a doe eating honeysuckle, picking up acorns etc... I killed my first deer at 14, I'm now 28 and have killed 41 deer. 14 of them were bow kills, the rest are muzzleloader and rifle kills. Killed my first with a bow at 16, but didnt kill another with the bow til I was 20. We're allowed 2 bucks a year and most years I've tagged out. Id say 75% of the deer I've killed were bucks and I should have the horns to most of them, I know squirrels and mice chewed up several that were in a old shed. All of my deer have come from private ground, even though I've hunted public numerous times. I'm hoping to knock one down on public this fall.

This will be my second year deer hunting (ever) here in WI. Last year I didn’t get/nor see anything from my climber stand. Hoping this year with having the saddle that changes cuz I really want to shoot and track me a deer!!! 37 yrs old, only have access to public land.

Age 31yrs old
Started 6yrs old
25 seasons
Georgia only 200 or so
Georgia has 10 anterless 2 bucks 12 pre season.
Plus options to bonus tags on draw hunts. I’ve seen some friends go 15/18 deer a season.

I’m on 49 archery kills, 42 compound, 6 crossbow, 1 longbow, going for 50 out the saddle this year. Started archery hunting at 15.

Age 43
Started around 15. Self taught hunter so I started slow.
Grew up hunting public land in Florida, moved to public land in North Carolina. Owned private land in Virginia for a while, now on leased land in Virginia.
Mainly bow hunt and have about 50 bow kills, problably another 20ish muzzle loader and gun kills. I'm definitely not a "gotta tag out" kind of guy.

How old you are - 32
When you started - 12ish
How many seasons - 20

Where you're from/where you generally hunt:

Grew up in KY. Moved to Alabama at 21. Hunted small family or friends private parcels growing up in KY. In AL I have hunted small private permission parcels, public land and I do have one friend that takes me out every now and then on his nice big deer farm. I only provide doe patrol with him.

And how many deer you've kilt:

KY - 13
AL - 9
IL - 2

Total - 24

70% with a bow and 30% with a gun.

Started deer hunting at 13, hunted five seasons on private land (5 deer killed)

Started again at 26, hunted 8 seasons to current. (26 deer killed)

Live in South Louisiana, hunt public land predominantly in south LA, some in central LA. Random hunts throughout rest of state on public land, Have made trips to the Midwest the last 3 seasons, plan to continue to do so. A smattering of private land opportunities here and there.

I notched numbers 27-31 this past season (in three different states).

Total 13 seasons, 31 deers kilt.

47 years old

Started hunting at age 12 so I have been hunting for 35 years.

I live and hunt in Minnesota. I did hunt in Wyoming once and shot a mule deer.

I haven't kept track of the number of deer I have shot but I know I have shot a buck every year I have hunted plus a mule deer buck in Wyoming so I have shot 36 bucks. Beyond that I have averaged probably 1.5 does a year so I have probably kilt close to 90 deer.

I started hunting only public in about 2002 and also started using a saddle then (treesuit). I had a few sits in tree stands since then but I have been almost entirely saddle hunting since 2002 so I have kilt a lot of deer from a saddle, including a buck my very first morning in a saddle. I had not practiced and pulled of a shot at a buck directly behind me with a bow. I was hooked after that.

How old are you: 33
When you started: 13
How many seasons: 9 (estimated)
Where you're from/where you generally hunt: South bama
How many deer have you kilt: 12
Also have never hunted outside the state of alabama.

Grew up dog hunting with my dad on his hunting club, we had blue ticks. They wouldn't let you shoot does and bucks had to be 4pt or better so for 3 or 4 years I never killed a deer. My uncle had a food plot in my grandmother's back yard and had a shooting house setup. So that's when I shot my first deer(doe)and my first buck(spike) not long after. When I got a little older I stopped hunting for awhile because I thought I had no where to hunt. I killed a few here and there from my family's small private acres but never really got hooked like I am now. Mid 20's I went as a guest back to dads hunting club and on the second drive of the day I killed my biggest buck which was a 6pt. Shot him 3 times with buckshot because I wasn't about to let him get away. Needless to say no one else wanted any of the meat so it was all mine lol. Anyways started watching youtube videos and realized these guys hunt public so could I and didn't realize how much public land was near me. I finally have somewhere to hunt.

Where you're from/where you generally hunt: Public Land in Wisconsin
How many deer have you kilt: 7 (3bucks, 4 doe)

Grew up watching fishing and hunting shows on Saturday mornings, but never had a hunter in the family, so I took hunters safety as a 30 yr old and has been a passion ever since. All hunting in Wisco, except one hog hunting trip a bunch of friends and myself took down to South TX - was pretty uneventful as it was snowing (and colder) in TX than it was in Wisconsin when we went! Good times nonetheless.
Looking for the first deer with a saddle this upcoming season!

How old are you: 27
When you started: 12
How many seasons: 15
Where you're from/where you generally hunt: Southeastern Ontario, Canada
How many deer have you kilt: 8 (6 bucks and 2 does)

In Ontario unless you are in a few specific areas we get one tag per year (although you can usually party hunt). It is a province wide buck tag but you have to apply for a draw to turn it into a buck or doe tag (doe portion is only for the specific area you apply for). I have gotten more serious about hunting and filling the freezer since school ended and have been successful lately with 4 deer in the past 3 seasons (my 3 biggest bucks plus a doe).

How old are you: 37

When you started: 12 took 2 years to kill my first deer so I was 14 before my 1st harvest. My 1st deer was 4pt at 20yds with my High Country Excalibur bow. I killed another buck (3pt) and a doe the next week before my dad had got his first of the season. Man did I really think I was something. Of course he caught up with me by end of that season but it felt great to help him fill the freezer.

How many seasons: 24

Where you're from/where you generally hunt: SW Virginia... all my deer have been from the county I live in.

How many deer have you kilt: 112 ( 48 bucks 64 does ) ( 45 bow 67 rifle or muzzeloader )

Adult onset whitetail hunter.

0 deer so far.

Hoping to take what I’ve learned here, books, DVDs and The Beast and put one in the freezer this fall. If I’m successful, it will be because of you boys.

I am AOH also and got skunked my first year too. I didn't discover saddle hunting until year six though, so you're ahead of the curve there!

Hang in there. It'll come together soon. Post a pic when it does. Not much beats a first deer smile.
