How many deer per year?

TN we can shoot 3 does a day and 2 bucks per season!!!!
I have shoot 50 in a season but used to aim for 13 - 15 to feed us when all the kids were home. now we are down to the last two kids and they are burnt out so I buck hunt now days I shoot 1 for hunters for the hungry and a buck if i see the one I'm after

Alabama has a fairly large herd. Once upon a not-so-recent time our total population was 2nd only to texas. We can shoot a doe a day all season, and have a 3 buck limit.

Important to note that I believe in setting grandiose goals. I fully intend to shoot every deer I can and hunt hard all year. But I am not saying I'll achieve 10 deer. I have missed 2 so far, which is really setting me back. :(

Are you attempting to take all 10 with archery equipment only or whatever means legal and necessary?

I can take 6 provided the third doe is in another zone. I usually take 1 either sex and only have used a compound bow so far.

My kill numbers have dropped considerably in the last five years. For the twenty or so years before I was pretty mad at them it seemed and didn't let much at all walk. I would tag out at the time with a limit of three bucks and I believe three does for a total of six here in Oklahoma but it's now six with only two bucks. Later I hunted Both Oklahoma and Kansas for whitetail for a span of ten years and killed at least one buck and one doe in each some years I still filled all my Oklahoma tags but only one buck a year. For the last five or so years I will still shoot a doe or two a year but it's a mature buck only and because of loss of private ground in both Oklahoma and Kansas I have went the last two years with out a buck. I've had plenty of opportunity at younger bucks in those two years but chose to let them grow. I hunt exclusively with a bow and still hunt them hard but its tough when targeting only mature bucks on highly pressured family and public ground.

I've been quite fortunate the past several years. I shoot for 4-5 in the freezer, but we can stretch 2 on a slim year. Anything over 2-3 just means that we entertain more company & share more with friends that share in our anticipation of the season every fall.

4 is my target and I usually hit that number. Eat some and give some away. Took 5 last year, combination of suburban hunts in MD just outside DC and NE PA. Central MD bag limits are high as they have a high density - something like 30+ doe/yr and 3 bucks. NE PA is the opposite, two doe and a buck but they have some deer management tags available for certain public lands.

I live in PA. Hunt in PA for the tradition. It is one buck / year and doe only with doe tag. I usually get 1 or 2 doe tags. Maybe shoot a doe or two in PA. Just don’t hunt here too often.

But I work and do most of my hunting in NJ. Been blessed to get in a NJ deer culling group where, in the past, there has been more deer to kill than time to kill em. And small suburban properties and some big woods. Unlimited doe and maximum of 6 (pretty sure) buck with the right tags. I try to kill at least 2 for the freezer. I have three friends who will process deer I kill and give me 1/2 back all packaged up, one property owner who would take a gutted deer and send to processor for himself, and our culling group has processor who will take deer and process and donate to food bank.

During good years, I take enough to get two to three deer in my freezer. (Maybe 5 to 6 deer). Really good years, I’ll donate extra if all my friends have enough deer. But we had a die off (midge, I think) and my current take is not as prolific as in past. And the last year and this year I am mentoring a new hunter, so my effort is in his success.

I try to maximize meat in my freezer and minimize my butchering duties. Then after that, donate extra, as long as I have energy for the tag and drag.

In MN its a max of 5 deer if you get the right tags. Only 1 buck state wide though. I also started hunting Indiana for a long weekend were my goal is usually just 1 deer and to hang out with family. In MN I have 1 doe so far. Holding out for a trophy buck during the rut. Have a 4 day park hunt at the end of Nov. where I can shoot 2. Hoping to fill both those and my buck tag for a total of 5 deer.

I've stretched out 1 deer for 4 adults for a year but it is less than ideal. My goal this year is 5 deer for the wife, kid and I. I really want to get a smoker and learn to make my own sausage and jerky.

1 buck is the goal. 2 if I'm extremely lucky. My 2 kids will shoot 1 each. That make 2-3 a year typically. Plenty for us.
Illinois.

No does?

For me not anymore. My kids will hold out for a buck 1st gun season. Then come second season will shoot whatever gives them a shot. And if that's a bust...late winter from the blinds on the standing corn is 100% guarantee.

I started hunting as a means of putting meat on our plates when times got tough for us a few years back. Two a year got us through that season of life. God continued to bless us with two a year since then. Think two a year is where He set my quota :)

HSH - Add that to the Saddle Hunter acronym list

So you try to fill every tag each year? Does the local deer population support that strategy?

EDIT: Support that strategy, meaning...do you have a ton of deer in your area?
Yes, we have a ton of deer in the areas of the states that I hunt. There are unlimited doe tags just across the county line and liberal tags in my county. So yes there are a ton of deer in the area.

I hunt in Louisiana (6), Mississippi (6), Illinois (2), and Oklahoma (6)

I have not and will not shoot my combined tag limit lol.

I usually shoot between 4-6 deer a year and by the time October comes around the freezer is nearly empty. I process all of my deer myself and we eat wild game almost exclusively. Add in a few pigs, turkeys, lots of saltwater/deepwater fish and we eat very well

I used to shoot 3-4 a year but a couple folks where I hunt have gotten older and less "choosey". Our doe population has taken a hit because of that. Now I am only going for a nice buck or 2 if it's worth it. Fortunately, for me not the farmers, we have had a good population of hogs move onto the property so I fill my freezer with those instead of the does until the population gets back up.

Oh, I'm hunting south GA.
