The only deer I ever hit and lost was a big buck that I hit in the void with my muzzleloader. There's a spot in their high back where you can pass a bullet through and not hit anything. Once the smoke cleared, he was on the ground spinning around with his front legs (thought I spined him). By the time I got reloaded, he was 150 yards away and turning a corner in the woods.
I trailed him for a few hundred yards and the trail went cold. That night, my neighbor mentioned he saw a big buck with a blood streak on his back lazily bounding through a field with his tail and head up. To this day, that shot haunts me but his sighting gives me hope or at least survived long enough to walk into another's sight.
It very well could've been me but I retired that rifle and haven't shot it since.
I’m not sure. I spent 5 hours and 11 miles scouting yesterday. Found sign, had a few deer, bear and hogs on the 2 trail cams my buddy and I set out. Didn’t find any sheds. Found a couple bedding areas just outside of the swamp areas and some fresh rubs. It wasn’t near as promising as I hoped for. Maybe Thomas Creek will be better. Not sure what to make of the island situation... Is it normal to find another deers shed in an area claimed by a more dominant deer?
You shall not pass lolmopars northern most pin is position A. Here is position A looking toward the island... visibility pretty much zero. Vegetation too tallView attachment 48427
Southern position B looking toward the island. I didn't take the range finder but I'd say it's closer to 60-70 yardsView attachment 48428
Saddle sniper position from the base and from directly in front of island
