Hunting Incident

Do you think they would care enough to go out and take a look? This is a state park so I am not sure if the few park rangers there would be interested. Maybe I will report this to the authorities.
They just tried to hang our wildlife chief because of a bird feeder on a separate property from the one she was hunting. If the wrong person had a bug up their behind, they'll look.

I was concerned about wearing fluorescent orange requirements here but I found that archery hunters are exempt in PA. It might be a good idea to wear an orange hat.

Definitely a good idea. Once the firearms come out, I am wearing hunter orange hat and t-shirt while on the move. Once stationary, I hang the orange shirt and hat near me, then camo up.

The guy was yelling at me from the tree pretty much like that. I was shocked for a few seconds. I hunted that area a few times since but if I pull in and see a black Dakota pickup, I'm going to the parking lot on the back side of the area.

Update:

This is just terrible all the way around. I don't want to judge anyone but how can you pull the trigger if you're not sure? I mean, its not a video game or something where something really will not happen or you get do overs. If you don't know for sure, don't pull the trigger. This kind of stuff gives hunting a bad image. There was a hunter a few years ago in my area who shot a women walking her dog. 20 minutes past legal shooting light. He thought she was a deer. He was using a scope topped pistol and the shot was like 150-200 yards away. Once he realized what he did he did try to save her but it was too late. Tragic all the way around but there are legal shooting hours for a reason too.

I hate the phrase "shot in hunting accident".Is it an accident that you did not identify what you were shooting at? you then pulled the rifle up, you pointed, you released the safety, then pulled the trigger. How is that an accident?
Where i hunt we have antler restrictions. 3 points one side, each must be one inch long. so i wind up counting and making sure its legal before i shoot.

I won't hunt during firearms season on any public land with pressure because of this. If you shoot someone while hunting, you need to have your hunting license revoked in all states for life and do jail time. I think the only thing we can do is let people know that they will suffer consequences if careless. The hunting license courses and exam are too easy, so they provide no filter. Two people flunked the exam when I took mine many years ago, and the instructors took them in the back and let them change some answers and they walked out smiling.

I agree that people throw around the word "accident" way too much. An accident is something like you step on black ice at night that you can't see and your legs slip out from under you. It isn't an accident when you are driving 100 mph and plow into a school bus, or you shoot someone.

No way. First the guy shot and then didn’t go down and check to see if he hit his target? He shot from behind a gate on an access road, which in Ohio would be illegal. Also hunting near a recreational area would likely be illegal.
Then the DA says “We didn’t know what we had, if we had a crime.” Umm... somebody got shot in the back of the head. I think it’s safe to say we had a crime.
The guy murdered the kid.

There’s already been at least two “hunting accidents” in Virginia this year. 10 year old shot and just recent a police officer shot his friend in the head while he was driving down the road. Both incidents were hound hunters who don’t know what is beyond the target. Happens every single year but there’s too much money in it for the state to do anything about it. Sad!

What counties in Virginia? I'm an instructor with DWR and get an annual report of all accidents (but it's for the previous year). A lot of the gun accidents seem to occur near the Virginia Beach region and with shotguns. Last year, one guy was shot while gutting his deer - he survived luckily.

My neighbor and good family friend accidentally shot and killed his friend while turkey hunting many years ago. The experience was so traumatizing for my neighbor he said he went into shock immediately and someone else called the accident in because they heard him screaming from hundreds of yards away. He had to go through therapy for years. Last year was the first time he hunted in 20 years since the accident.

His friend apparently changed spots than originally planned, and had his decoys on his back as he was going through a bush while also turkey calling. The rush and excitement of seeing a bird gave my neighbor that tunnel vision we get when we shoot a deer etc. He saw a turkey, heard a turkey, and shot quickly to not lose the turkey. He said it just all happened so fast.

This was a genuine accident, and the poor guy was a wreck and almost took his own life many times after the incident. He wouldn't talk to anyone about it until last year... I think he's finally come to peace with it (at least enough to hunt again - he only will deer hunt though - and to talk about it)

So sometimes, accidents do happen. But I agree the case shared in posts above does not sound like an accident. Stay safe out there and wear blaze orange whenever you can. I wear a hat when walking or stalking during bow season no matter what - deer never seem to be bothered by it.

Thats what worries me. I keep getting the hunt club Treaspassing, when the dogs get on deer all heck breaks loose. You can hear sometimes 10 shots or more going off. I will be dealing with some if this issue later, Probably make a thread on it.

One of the reasons I have a patch on my pack.

The other thing that scares me is archery season. We get a lot of people here with Crossbows that literally road hunt. Seen more then a couple of guys looking for Bolts on the side of the road, talking about how they missed them 3 times and can't find the bolts. I own a crossbow, have nothing against them, there are some really dumb people that have no business hunting with anything.

Luckily most guys like that stay close to the road. I have been known to hang a hunter orange vest on a tree above me during archery season if I am close to a road or parking area, Especially if I see the same trucks driving up and down the road.

ETA: It also lets other bow hunters you are there, Generaly they will go aeound or avoid the area to not mess up your hunt. Most Bow guys are like that.

By in large though I feel much safer during archery. I had a guy fire a shot in my direction while scouting on a WMA on a Sunday! Sundays on public is a no go here. He was also not wearing hunter orange. That one came close to a shootout since I had my CCW, I really thought he was trying to shoot me until I saw a bucking bounding in front of me. 2nd time in my life I almost shot someone. He left in a hurry, Wardens never found him. I now wear orange vest and flag on my pack while scouting on Sundays or during the off season. It makes for guaranteed encounters with DWR officers when they see you. I dont worry about it much, tell them that story and they are on the way when they figure out you are not hunting.

What I find strange is the kid was sitting on a bench with his girlfriend. If there was a bench with a sunset view in one of my spots I think I’d remember where it was. Two humans on a bench wearing human clothes. Idk maybe the back of the bench could be brown and roughly size of a deer. I guess silhouetted too if they are looking at the sunset.
