I Need Someone to Slap My Face

I'm with you. I love my deer hunting without a doubt but I find myself getting a bit burnt out the last few years. I'm planning on doing some waterfowl hunting this season along with some small game too to break it up a bit. Not giving up deer hunting by any means but miss some of the stuff I used to do.

@CZMark I bought 2 boxes of steel shot at cabelas today while picking up a work sharp elite sharpener for my broadheads and a lithium battery pack for one of my trail cameras. I’ve never bird hunted in my life. One must be prepared though in case a friend needs moral support in the blind while they are coming to grips with their poor life choices

I don't get it. I have done both seriously for years.

Early season goose may be my least favorite. Yea, you get shooting, but then you have a pile of hot meat to clean in 85 degree heat. And if you've ever smelled a dead goose in the heat, you know what I'm talking about.

This is why we had a freezer full of geese to train the labs with. We couldn’t stand cutting them open on hot Sept day.

I see you signed up for the contest so you must have come to your senses…

The guy who set my bow up was a champion goose caller. The day I picked said bow up from him, he gave me a taste of that championship flair: he said, “anyone can sound like A goose, or even TWO geese, but if you want the flock you gotta sound like…” and he put that call to his lips, unleashing absolute hell in true Branta canadensis style, proverbially filling the archery shop rafters with feathers and the floors with feces. Sounded like 100 unique birds giving each other the business. Haven’t waterfowl hunted myself but I’ve had a neverland fantasy about it ever since that moment.

I almost didn't...after my epic fail last year. I didn't even shoot a doe last year.
Good news is I have yet to meet a single person who cares about winning the contest other than for some bragging rights and smack talking so I doubt anyone but you thought of it as a failure. All I got from my team last year was some help for my newbie self, encouragement, and the added juice to go get out there more often.

It’s like having a group of hunting buddies and mentors to a point for me.

@CZMark now that we are teammates it is my duty to tell you to kill deer. You can kill birds too but also kill deer. That is all.

my bowhunting partner (lives in nebraska) was a guide back in his youth. I brought some of my dads circa 1950’s wooden duck calls out to the river one trip! Man, we had “mallets” dropping in like fighters! Been a long time since I’ve heard that from a duck blind, but there’s no better sound!

The great part about early season is we can kill five birds per day.

We can kill 15/day the whole month of September……

Can’t have enough guns when they’re on the fields we can hunt.

Dumb question but can I reliably kill a few honkers without having to buy a bunch of expensive decoys?
