Illinois HB 4386--passed rifles

This is off topic but a little expansion to Iron_llama post above for those interested. Point Blank maximum range is the distance based on the size of your target that your bullet is never higher or lower than the diameter of the vital zone. This way from point blank to this established range you only have to aim in the middle of vital zone.Whitetail deer range in size dependent on age, sex, etc. Let’s say the area a bullet must hit on an average deer is 8”, the old pie plate theory, anyway use the attached link below to figure your rifle load combinations range. I play on the safe side and calculate a 4-6” vital zone.

So with 150 grain bullets, I should be able to sight my rifle at dead on at 17 yards...correct? Then it will be dead on at 202 yards and max range is 235 yards?

Yes, if the data , Drag function, BC, weight, velocity and elevation are correct then that calculation would be correct. I would advise to sight in the rifle 3.89” high at 100yds, not zero at 17yds.

gotcha

Ohio did the same thing a few years ago. I still use a muzzleloader for gun season but most people switched to the various straight walled calibers. .45-70, .350 Legend, and .450 Bushmaster seem to be the most popular choices.

Same with Maryland. Like you, i still use the muzzy during all firearms. I would love to get a straight walled rifle but its so much money for a little bit more range that i rarely ever need. If i miss on the first shot i dont deserve a second lol. You win big louie

Excellent post Deltahuntr, thanks for that.

Newhunter1, you'll always want to verify your math and calculations at as close to max range as your local range allows. Sometimes bullets don't actually behave the way they "should". It can be tough to find a place to shoot past 100yd but it's worth it, especially if you're contemplating 235-yard shots.

I really like this method for sighting in hunting rifles. I'm very much a "set it and forget it" shooter with this application. If I have a max 235yd point blank range, I'll use my rangefinder or GPS to determine landmarks at my max range, and I just won't shoot past them. Never been an issue in the North Woods, but you probably have more farmland in IL.

Wind dope shouldn't be too much of an issue at the ranges you're talking about, but if it's really windy you'll want to shoot a few inches into the wind.

Following, not that I'm against slugs but availability and price is getting tough to take.

"a bottleneck centerfire cartridge of .30 caliber or larger with a case length not exceeding one and two-fifths inches"

I guess that knocks out 30-06 and 308 win. Looks like I'm going rifle shopping!

That's why I went out and bought a CVA Scout in 350. It knocked out my .308.
