In the market for a new saddle

Hey all! I currently hunt out of a Tethrd Mantis. I’ve modified it tons with adjustable amsteel bridge, prusics on the bridge connections so I can dial in the angle it sits at…and a couple other things I’m not thinking of right now. The thing is, I find that it’s not as comfortable as I would like, especially for all day sits. I would like a little more back support and a bit more real-estate to support my backside. I’m 6’5” and 290lbs. I’ve been looking at the Latitude Lonestar, Method 2, Cruzr‘s offerings (though I can’t remember the names right now) and even Tethrd’s new saddles. Should I go with a great single panel, or are the two panel saddles better? What new features are dealbreakers for you and what should I decide I can’t live without? I would like to keep it around $300 if I can, but would like to be more comfortable in the the tree. What suggestions would you make for a guy my size?

I tried the Tethrd Phantom... it was ok... once i sat in my Method 2 i put my ohantom up for sale the same day... the rope belt, the comfort of a 2 panel, the way it stores with the magnets... i love the thing

I feel ya!! I'm also in a Mantis. New to the game and bought it dirt cheap from a friend. Gets you in a tree but never really comfortable. Will be upgrading for sure next year! Latitude's new Lonestar or Method 2 also catch my eye. Following to see what the veterans think...

Cruzr XC is the what Jesus would wear. The holy Grail. Hear great things about the Lonestar. The XL version might be perfect for you.

The Latitude Method 1 and 2 were both medieval torture devices for me. Brutal.

I think two panels attempt to solve a non existant problem with single panels while being way more fussy.

Buzzard Roost. My last saddle was a JX3, which some would consider the most comfortable. It's like sitting in a lounge chair. Using the Buzzard Roost, I don't miss the JX3. The Buzzard Roost is a 2 panel, except it acts more like a pleated one, but with the ability to give even more back support if wanted. It has buckles connecting the panels together, but you don't have to unhook them to expand it out. Each panel is adjustable for where you want or don't want pressure. That ability is unmatched by any other saddle.

I'll second the cobra from CGM. I'm 6'2" and 240#ish. It's a very comfy saddle and built like a tank

Come to the light, the JX3 tree saddle light..............
Don't be afraid, you will sit from dark to dark very comfortably, no fidgeting, be able to snooze when you want, no dreaded hip pinch, no back aches, you can shoot 360° around the tree with any weapon, bow or gun, no weak side shot.
No platform required, only a ROS, or a JX3 wide top climbing stick, no sore feet, no knee pads required, no sore knees, no tired legs from leaning as you can sit all day, built in pack frame for carrying all your needs. No getting into “saddle shape” as your Lazy Boy at home does it for you. Buy once, cry once.
Come to the light, the JX3 light...........

I started a thread similar to this about a year and a half ago, and I also was moving on from a Mantis. I was strongly considering a Cruzr, but a few of these guys who've already commented steered me in the direction of the original Wood Deluxe (now from Ape Canyon). I am happy they did. Nothing against any other saddles, but this thing is so well made and so comfortable - I'd have a hard time to be convinced there's any other saddle that's better. Definitely give that saddle a look if you're interested in an expandable.

Since the saddle market has exploded there have been three saddles that I've observed that the highest percentage of people that purchased them have liked them, as confirmed by the fact you rarely see them in the classifieds. They are the Cruzer XC, Woods deluxe (now made by Ape Canyon), and the Lonestar (now made by latttitude). Pretty much every other saddle you will find some that love them and some that don’t. IMO you can’t go wrong with one of those three.
