Is there an end to the "wants"?

Just get enough stuff so your primary "want" is to get into the woods.
If you spend more time here then you do hunting, your wallet and your wife will not be happy.

I'm not as bad as some people here, but I am indecisive every off-season. I've stuck with the same saddle but I'm on my fourth platform since last Fall. I also keep switching broadheads. I'm hoping to be content for this next season and focus more on getting access to property and finding deer. That's ultimately what will put deer in the freezer. Not a new arrow setup, new saddle, sticks, platform, etc. Probably helps that I'm a tightwad by nature and I'm not going to pay for the high end stuff. Going to knock on doors and send out letters to hopefully get access to some private ground near me for next season. Also scout more on public.

Well if ur on here then ur probably always looking for better, faster, quieter, packable & lighter

I think g2 or someone on here said for gear weights, we’re chasing 0lbs

So I guess it’ll never stop

Then once they reach 0lbs it’ll keep going into the negative numbers and next thing ya know the latest and greatest gear will be carrying you in instead.

I don’t think they ever truly end if you’re really into this stuff. I can say that they do get tempered quite a bit after some soul searching, at least for me they have. Like majority of us I have bought tried and sold more times than I’m proud of but it has been pretty helpful for me to narrow down the “types” of gear I like. Then from there I can sort of play in one ballpark at a time.

For instance, tried one sticking and really liked it at first until I didn’t anymore. Then decided to forget trying to chase the next dream piece of equipment for one sticking that might be the “game changer” I’m hoping for and instead focused on the best set of sticks ‘for me’. I think I found that now, at least for the time being. I’m almost there/might already be there with the platform. Also decided to take cost of gear into account much more and that has also helped me narrow down my focus. Then also if there was something big/expensive I REALLY wanted, I often don’t let myself buy it until I sell something or several things first to help fund it. Makes it feel a lot better doing it that way.

In the past I would never do any of this stuff and it was maddening after a while and just kind of sapped my energy and enthusiasm (and bank account) for whatever the interest was. Feels much more relaxing and liberating to have some self-imposed control on this stuff.

I’ve been trying to figure out why this is so addicting. Been doing the soul searching thing lately as well wondering what rings me in about this. I hunted for years with old camo, a summit climber, and only spent money on the necessities (broadheads, arrows, and licenses) and killed plenty of deer. Then I discover saddle hunting and I’m all about the gear. Trying new saddles, platforms, packs, you name it.. I may have gotten things flipped..it’s been fun, but I need to chill with the ‘want’ing in 2021 and focus on hunting!

I know right?? I do too. Been really trying to find what I like this year and stick with it so I don’t have to do it in the next years to come too. I think it’s the same effect Disney has on little kids. It’s all just so enchanting and wonderful. It just takes over your mind and imagination. Lol.

I signed out for 2.5 months during deer season! In the off season though nothing passes the time until next season better than researching better gear, I’m always looking to shave an ounce here or there when really what I need to do is put the fork down for a few months before season, as I get older it’s becoming harder to do!!

Yeah I think a lot of people would be happier, including me, if they just got proficient with a setup and focused on hunting more than the never ending search for the perfect saddle, platform, pack, etc. It takes some of the simplicity out of hunting IMO. Just appreciate what you have.

I say life is short and if you can afford it (key word here being IF) then go for it. I have spent more on hunting gear in the last year or so than I have in the last ten but I'm having a blast. I love trying out new gear and who else can't wait to see what the saddle companies are gonna come out with next. It is almost like falling in love with my favorite sport all over again.

There are hunters who work to optimize their gear and there seems to be saddlehunters who would rather play around with gear than actually hunt. Being the former group, it does slow down. Guess it never completely stops, but I am about 95% content with where my setup landed after more tinkering than I would have liked. Just the past 1-2 years commercial options have exploded since I started which makes the journey to find good gear so much simpler. I think for the latter group, knowing a few of those types over the years, the current fad eventually dies out and then they'll be nads deep into whatever else they dive into next.

Forget the wants. Concentrate more on hunting during the right time. All the gear and fancy stuff won't help you murder deer if they are not there to be wacked. Save your money. Take 2 weeks off during peek rut and kill your limit. That's how you save money. IMO. I have been trying to lean towards that more. Just be in the woods when the deer are up and moving will improve your odds way more than the fanciest of things. I think nutter hit it best in one of his videos. Spend the money on gas to get you where the deer are.

Peak Rut here is right when they start running Dogs. Really sucks when you are chasing a big one. Im making the change this year to try and move in on them before peak rut.

I bought a handheld thermal camera, 'cause I wanted to see what I was missing in the dark. It was at that point I admitted I had a problem. I've tried to reign it in quite a bit since. :)

If you can find a way to stop the wants let me know.....i figure the day that happens is the day i hang it up hunting. Always wanting to make something better than year before

I like to tell my wife they are needs. Then I realize I have about 3 or 4 of the same things. Different colors lol.

You are in the paradox and challenge most Americans face and often fail in striking a balance between spending significant sums of money on real and truly useful and justifiable needs VS financially wasteful wants that we if honest with ourselves could be just as successful and easily live and get by without.
I personally can not even begin to comprehend let alone understand how bowhunters in the 10s of thousands spend close to if not more than a $1k every other year or two on the newest latest greatest compound bow when in my opinion given the superb quality of compounds have attained for well over 15 years now for a good archer and accomplished hunter his compound of choice has little to do with his success as a hunter and changing from a $1k Mathew's to a $1200 Hoyt is not going to make a good hunter and archer IMHO significantly better to justify the significant cost of a new bow.
Merchandisers spend billion$ every year on advertising to convince consumers the perfectly good fully functional items they currently own are somehow no.longer good enough to use for their intended purpose and should be replaced with the newest more capable version they have for sale and surprisingly it works astonishingly well on 10s millions of consumers every day it would seem and the hunting industry particularly those in it that make compound bows are no different
