Is your season going to plan?

4 hunts so far and I've only encountered three deer - all of which I bumped out of their beds mid-day. Got my first bow kill today, a hog, but it was a gut shot which didn't bode well for meat... still, I feel encouraged and am just happy to be learning as I go. I don't have any big ambitious goal other than fill as many tags as I can.

I juggle w the family but do put in food plots through the spring and summer, it’s a passion but also a butt kicker. They look real good this year. But the Ohio DNR bought the property across the river - the best bedding area in town - and put a hiking trail through it. We’ll see if and when they lottery it for hunting. I checked it out a week ago and met a renaissance fair cosplayer wearing plastic antlers and a frog on his head, filming himself for the gram, in what used to be an awesome hemlock section full of rubs. Maybe it’s a coincidence but I usually have 1-4 decent bucks to target and so far this year there’s 0. Maybe that bedding area was more important to my area than I realized, will see. So I’ve worked hard for 7+ years to create superior habitat and this year was the first sign of a big step backwards.

Edit: I think there’s a pretty big difference between buying a parcel adjacent to public land, vs having the public land arrive next door.
How many points was frog antler?

My season so far has been more learning experiences.
Started off getting out less this year at home compared to last year.
Took the youngest out hunting and saw a deer.
scouted on a swanp edge and spooked a doe.
Went to the parents house in Ohio for archery season. Had 9 doe opportunities, attempted three, missed all three over the back ><, lost two arrows. As we left a 9 point came out to almost mock...

So mid season looking at getting arrow resupply (thanks method archery) while preparing for a lottery hunt coming up in less than two weeks... lucky I can use gun or bow. Going to have to make the best with what I have...

Very slow start….but that’s usual for me until the pre rut. I haven’t had any real shooters on camera, but they should start being more active the next couple weeks. I’m trying to stay out of my prime area until a good cold front and the wind direction in right. Trying to hunt smarter this year instead of hunting an area regardless of wind direction.

Weather, work, and my mother passing kind of took the wind out of my hunting plans so far.

It's still early here in MI, so I'm sure I'll get out in the woods more, but so far I've only been able to get out once. I did see some turkeys and bumped a doe was scouting a new area.

Last year I scouted a ton on the public land near me, and identified some good areas, but the urge to keep scouting it all kept me from being successful. I feel like I'm still stuck in that scouting mode. I find some good sign but then wonder if I'll find even better sign if I keep going. Having to be a weekend warrior doesn't help either, but I have some time off coming up that'll get me in the woods more.

What, going as planned? It hasn't even started yet. But tomorrow is coming.
