No one said providing for the family was cheap. I keep telling my wife that. Oh...another good one is "Them deer ain't gonna kill themselves."

Does anyone hunt without knee pads or are they a necessity? I have a mantis and predator on the way so I’d really rather not have to explain another purchase to the wife...

I can't speak from experience, but I know some guys go without knee pads and straddle the tree with knees on outside of tree. Others use a kneeling pad strapped to tree. I'm hoping I like the knee pads for compactness and ease of use. After watching some saddle hunting videos, I think they may come in handy for those strong side/weak side shots as well . If nothing else, you can probably turn around and sell them and get your money back.

I definitely understand not wanting to explain purchases to the Mrs. though.

I didn’t wear knee pads my 1st 2 years. All I have now is the thin pad on Kuiu pants. It helps a little but I never felt the need for knee pads. I think it depends on the tree and your tether height. I usually tie off right at head height and have a longer bridge than most. 34in about. I think it doesn’t pull me into the tree as hard as a shorter set up. I swap knees if one gets tired. Straddle smaller trees. Sometimes on long sits I may sit to the side and have the tree on the outside of one thigh. If I’m free to move, I can get comfortable then switch pressure points when needed. I don’t want to carry something else in the woods.

It depends how you like to hunt. If you are leaning and standing more on the platform you won't put as much pressure on your knees. I'm a sitter and I lean into the tree. I wear knee pads 100% of the time and won't go without them.

X2. I bought the pads to try though. They do make a difference. I can see skipping them on quick 4 hour hunts and packing them on longer sits.

Time to test! Somehow, I ordered late Monday night, got the delivery notification on Tuesday that they should be here in 10 days with a tracking number, and arrived on Wednesday morning! Now that’s service!

For a couple of hour sit I don’t strap them on. I usually always have them with me though. They will greatly add comfort with allowing you to sit in multiple positions with your knees against the tree and they will protect your pants. For those longer sits I like to rest my knee(s) against the tree with my upper legs at about a 45* angle. I also tuck my knee up higher when using a back band, lower leg against the tree and “recline”, switching off knees occasionally. There are multiple ways to switch positions to remain comfortable and multiple ways knee pads aid in comfort. I am more of a sitter than a leaner but when I’m leaning it is usually with my knees on the tree.

I now have two sets of arc’teryx. Have always used HD’s. But not sure what they have now but in high school football our pants had take out knee pads. You could wear a pair of those if you wanted under the pants pads.
