Live from the ground 22/23

Did you find him?

Well lost blood and it got too dark. Kind of petered out. Looks like maybe single lung. Just blood coming out the left side it seemed. Found a nice blood pool and then it was spotty. It’s plenty cold so I marked last blood and we’ll start again after hunting in the morning.

Here is a quick setup I made off the ground about a week ago. I saw a doe group cross the road in thick cover driving in, so I went around and tried to get ahead of where they were going. They must have just bedded down. I never saw anything. I sat up against the root ball of a downed tree. Some animal had a burrow in it, and I was half expecting a possum to stick his head out and look at me like "get off my lawn!"

Hunted until about 10:30. Found last blood and a few more drops about 20 yards past that. Last spot was next to an ATV trail. Searched with my brother and nephew for a while and could not find any more blood or any indicator on which direction he went. After seeing the blood in the daylight I think it was a flesh wound. Looked like he was just bleeding from the left side and the blood was dark and no bubbles. Just drops aside from one spot where it looked like he laid down. Hopefully just a glancing wound. The area was thick so I think I possibly got some deflection.

Here’s blood near the point of impact.

Lesson learned. Should have waited for a better opening or passed. Not worth the frustration.

I’ve got a Pacseat to arrive tomorrow. Any tips or suggestions would be great. Will primarily bow hunt, and a little rifle hunting.
Stay still, have some front cover and plenty of back cover, I actually prefer shooting through small windows so I can get away with a little more movement. A cheapo seat pad between the seat fabric makes cold weather more bearable and relieves some tailbone discomfort (test for squeaks before hunting).
Avoid the temptation to pet the deer as they walk by. :)

I try to set up so that I have thick cover (fallen down tree, palmettos, brush I can't see through, that hides me from anything between my 2 o'clock to 9 o'clock. I can't shoot that without a lot of movement. I try to walk in and set up so that my backtrack is behind me. Basically you want deer to appear where you can easily see and shoot without moving.

Also, the new seat I have needed silencing. I cut the paracord holding the back rest material on and wrapped the whole chair in vet wrap, then retied the truckers hitches.

I also shortened the vertical straps that hold the waist belt to the chair. That way when the chair has a heavy load the waist belt actually takes load properly.

Snuck into another thick patch yesterday. This is just like trying to get to a herd bull. Gotta get through the little ones and the random does. Saw him within minutes of breaking cover. It was slow going. Tree would only partially help with scent. Much better shot opportunity from the ground if you can get set up.

Passed a doe at 12 feet. Alot harder with a stickbow. I need another ghillie in a darker color. My $25 mossy oak stool worked flawlessly...lol

I have spent so much money on chairs that are uncomfortable or break. One of these days I'll have to break down and get one.

I was on the edge. Finally just bought a high backed 3 leg Mossy Oak stool. Plenty comfortable, good height, I can strap it to my pack.....or do what I typically do.....carry it in one hand to help move branches and briars out of the way. No need to slip it off the back...too much movement...just unfold real quietly and sit down.
Someday maybe, but right now I'm preferring a minimalist internal frame pack that's rigid enough to strap a couple of items to. In this case a Kuiu 1800.

Is it like this one? This pic is from a pig hunt several years back.
