LIVE from the saddle 2023

Did a bunch of deer drives today for family members who haven't tagged out yet. I implored them to go to this one stand location. It did not see much action the first 3 days of rifle season, so no one wanted to go there. Its a spot that no matter how dead it gets you never count it out.Well no one went there and the 11 I was chasing all year walked by at 9. Heres hoping the sun of a gun makes it to next year. Seeing a stickbow in that pic makes me happy. :)
It's muzzleloader season here in Michigan but I took the daughter out this morning and she had that in her hand. I took the stickbow on a whim hoping it would be lucky for me. Turns out it wasn't. Not only did I lose my Qwik Loc and drop two arrows but I had to do the climb of shame for the first time this year to retrieve a hung up rappel rope. The pull down line hung over a broken branch and the rope fell below it. That effectively turned my pull down rope into a pull up preset. No way to get it down but go back up after it. :tearsofjoy:

All of that was just a reminder that using a stickbow might be harder but, it’s not the limiting factor. Lol

Good thing its crunchy this morning. The arrow keeper ripped off my bow somewhere. I can't keep an arrow nocked (I've already dropped 2 and retrieved 1 with my grapple). If something comes by I'll have to nock and shoot.

I use a rug rest instead of a leather plate. The arrow stays on the string in all but the highest winds. Less chance of inadvertent noise also.

The quicklock has it's place but isn't absolutely necessary. Try it, you might like it.

Well it’s my turn to have fits in the tree. Got up here early and smoothly…too smoothly. Everything was set except for my bow, which as I pulled up my stabilizer caught in a tangle of branches. I tried to jostle it out, only made it worse and I had to go 22’ back down to untangle it. Great. Now I go back up and get my bow up, shocked that nothing has blown yet and it’s still barely sunrise, and couple of practice draws. There’s a little catch in the draw cycle, sounds like my cable slide. Everything looks aligned, clean, and feels right otherwise. Hoping it’s just some dirt or dew messing with the wax. I’m off to the archery shop this week if it persists.

Just had a spike come in and work a scrape. He was in some pretty thick stuff and only offered one tight shot. Not trying to be picky but waiting for something better/ cleaner shot. He had my heart pumping till I saw his antlers lol

I’m nothing if not a team player. Spike for team spike. Would have loved to shoot something bigger but with the clumsy day I had I was happy to have this fella. First deer with a rifle and let me tell you what, I see the allure. 70-80 yard shot through a small window. Joker cut a complete backflip and then summersalted twice down the hill toward the boat. 460BA235-B712-4633-AD6A-F56D39AAA126.jpeg
