LIVE from the saddle 2023

They'll tend to run away from a human as a first reaction. Unless cornered. Like most wild animals. I personally wouldn't want to test the theory, though.

All I can say is that squirrels no longer hold the title for loudest critter in the forest. This guy gave zero ****s about any noise he was making. He hung around the area for 10-15 minutes and eventually made his way up a hill and away from me.
Years ago I chased one across a winter wheat field up in MO with full intentions of kicking it like we grew up kicking possums and coons, until it made it to its burrow. He was fully prepared to make big stand once backed in that hole. He got my full attention at the point I got a good look at his teeth and claws. Left him be in his hole and went back over where my buddy and the farmer were. Farmer said he wasnt quite sure what was wrong with me cause that was the dumbest thing he had ever seen anyone do and that I should be thankful I didnt catch up to him before he made his hole cause he would have torn me a new butt hole. Lol. He didnt redneckinize the fearlessness of a possum kicker.

1st time in this spot this season. Public land Ohio. Had our 1st good frost this morning but couldn’t get out. Transition between swamp, old clear cut bedding, and oak flat with good feeding sign.

Hard to say how much I would pay to watch one of those steroid skunks make you a new poop shoot but it’s north of 4 figures I think

They are way more impressive up close and personal than they are on tv. Hard to say which would be worse to tangle with in a phone booth, badger or bobcat. In my mind it's a toss up.

I put the Mohican Sneak on one yrs ago. He was only partially out of a hole and I shot it in the back w/a Snuffer. I really thought it was a Posssum. Wow, the switch went off and I thought I may have shot a bear instead ! After studying them a little it appeared there were more living in that area. For his size, he seemed pretty intimidating.

The Mohican Sneak is a thing I need to know.

First thing you have to do is learn to move like a growin turnip.
About 30 days from seed to harvest. So I can cover about 100 yards a month. I haven’t gotten to move that slowly since my first kid was born. Now I’m just a skittish mess after two more kids, like a squirrel in my huntin’ saddle.

Holy macaroni. Tried a new spot today. Scouted my way in. Came across a scrape on a bench with some hot sign. Went to take another step past that scrape and a slob popped up right in front of me. Hes was definitely a shooter. He was bedded in some deadfall. Spooked him but that's definitely some good Intel for next season 20231024_145854_compress23.jpg20231024_145920_compress48.jpg

Hang and hunt. Lots of big deer killed coming back to the same spot. It's a proven method. Bump n dump.
