LIVE from the saddle 2023

Thanks - I was kinda hoping it was a slate call though as I'm planning on using the saddle this year and any sound I can make with a mouth call no turkey (or anyone else} wants to hear.

what he said. I grabbed it on my last order because my new phone case is a semi stick silicon case that doesn’t slide into my pocket quickly or easily. However the magnet doesn’t seem to hold well enough in this particular setup so the phone slides off. Could be the Abe the magnets/plate combo. I’m going to play with it.

you could just put a small cord on a slate call. A lot have a hole or handle on them somewhere. Tie the other end to the pen/pick and put a small loop in the middle that you can clip onto your caribeaner.

I was replying to ol’ @raisins in a different thread and a doe came right to my tree. Like one yard. Sorry brother Raisins, I’ll have to reply later. she kinda saw me, or maybe she smelled my poop stain when I realized she was there. Almost got a shot but something else took her attention.
Moral: phone going away for now.

I think @BTaylor said it before, but these phones have attributed to more tag soup than CWD and EHD combined!!
Definitely saved one's skin the other evening in my case. Had 2 doe come in to about 18 yards of me on the ground and when I looked up from the dang phone, they were staring at me. The big one looked at me like "can you hear me now?" and huffed and they were gone.

Screenshot_20231219-163151~2.pngI love watching this thread, so I'm finally joining in and posting. Haven't been out much since I got a buck and doe with my bow in early November. Found some time to do my first (and probably only) muzzleloader hunt of the year this afternoon. I'm trying out a new spot in the only small piece of public land within an hour drive from where I live. I've hunted this piece a few times before, but never seen any deer. Hopefully today is different.

First climb in a while today since I have been ground hunting a good bit lately. Walked back about 3/4 mile and found some really good sign under some red oaks. There was also a dead hog nearby I'm guessing got shot over the weekend. He was pretty rank, but that sign was just too good, so I climbed 2TC up to about 22 feet and settled in. Maybe that nasty hog will be good cover scent. That was about noon.

About 2 I had a small buck; I think maybe a 6-point come through with his tongue hanging out. He was hot on the trail of something. Then about 3:30 I had a doe come in to about 50 yards behind me and mill around. She was nervous and I thought it was because of the dead pig. She eventually worked around me and to the north by 4:00. At about 4:45 I heard a rifle shot off to my southeast so I think that another hunter must have been off in there and that had her nervous.

It was a fun hunt and good to be back in the saddle again.

The last picture is the little buck. I took a short video of him as he cruised through.

View from last night, I was covered up in deer by about 20 minutes before sunset (probably saw 25). I was mostly looking to shoot a doe, but when 5 bucks came out with one being a good looking 8 I decided to hold out to see if I could get a shot at him. I first saw him about 70 yards out with two 6s and two forkies in tow. He slowly fed his way towards me but hung out for a while at about 50 yards. Meanwhile, I had 6 deer within 20 yards of me. He eventually closed to 17 yards but by that time it was too dark to shoot. Going to try it again tonight.

Current view, don’t normally sit AMs during the late season but I only have three days to bowhunt before the holiday gun hunt starts in WI so decided to give it a go. Sitting a preset ladder that is pretty productive in the AM normally. Have seen 5 so far, but the only two that came through in range were fawns. They are currently bedded about 50 yards from me.

Back in the same tree as last night, this time hung a lock on and 20’ climbing stick so my old man can sit here the rest of the season. Trails from four different bedding areas all converge to run the soft edge between the swampier area and some cedars/hardwoods. My wind is *this* close to being bad, but we’ll see how it goes. The best way I’ve heard setting up with the wind was “you want it to be almost right for them, and almost bad for you”, and this setup is exactly that right now. I don’t really have anything to lose, so if I blow it up tonight, oh well.
