LIVE from the Saddle 2024

I hunted yesterday evening in a new to me area. They select cut a big patch a few years ago, several hundred acres it seems, and did not replant pines, but left the little white and red oaks and just let it go fallow. It looks like perfect bedding. Well, I drove around and just spot checked the small white oaks that I could see from the road. After checking 5 or 6 spots I found what I was looking for. Acorns dropping from two small oaks, notched caps under the trees, and very fresh deer poop. The trees are on the edge of that thick regrowth cutover and situated at the top of a "U" shaped valley of more open pine timber with interspersed softwood "trash" trees. It looked like an ideal setup.

I 2TC'd about 24 feet up a basketball diameter red oak about 2 and got settled in. I changed out the metal Raptor buckles on the waist belt on my saddle for an Amsteel whoopie belt and it worked like a charm. I really like this new setup.

Nothing showed for the evening. Maybe it is a morning spot? I'll sit that spot again soon. It is active. It just looks like a spot where a deer will get killed.

First sit of the year. It took me way too long to get set up, this tree isn’t quite what I hoped it would be, BUT DANG IT FEELS GOOD TO BE HUNTING.

First hunt with my One Sticks.

Western Kansas, going to be drizzling off and on today. Plan to sit until about 2:00.

I will be hitting it hard over the next 2 weeks. Good luck out there today.

Big buck is standing here at 30yds… are you taking the shot?

Well I took it. He was dead broadside and stopped. The arrow how hit high for some reason. It’s a little slick/greasy with a very small amount of blood. Bad news is it came a flood right after the shot at 6:30 this morning. Big heavy horned 8. Not real confident about a recovery,

Edit. I didn’t see all those limbs when I took the shot. It was barely daylight and overcast. He came in out of nowhere. It happened super fast.

Maybe give it till 230 or something? I've found if you don't jump them they lay down not far off. Maybe you hit an artery and he's internally bleeding. Don't know about where you are, but around me we have licensed tracking dogs you can call for tough ones. They handlers are real good at telling you of you're likely to find it or not.

The game plan is to sit here until around that time and ease the way he went. He ran off like a bat out of hell.

If you can use a dog, the rain will help the dogs nose, not hurt it. Keep that in mind. Greasy makes me think brisket. Hopefully you got an artery, otherwise he'd be perfectly fine. Good luck!

Thats a tight squeeze, I could certainly see that looking a lot more open in grey light though. Hopefully your below the spine and gonna find a dead deer close by. Was the shot forward, back or right behind the shoulder just high?

Behind the shoulder, a little back and high.

Shot with a mega meat.

I'm with the other guys, if your under the spine you may be golden. If you havent, I would take a compass bearing on the last spot you could see him and the last direction you could hear him. Could be handy for a no blood search if you dont have a dog tracker to call.
