Louisiana Saddle Hunter's Thread

Last year at Lake Ramsey I made a hunt on the southern side. Drove an hour there, walked a mile back to the river with my summit on my back, climbed a tree set up on a nice trail on the edge of the savannah and sat back thinking, “it’s gotta happen today!” Realized I needed to nock an arrow. Looked at my bow, not an arrow to be found in my quiver. They had gotten pulled out while I trudged through thick cover with the bow on my back. Made the walk back to the truck and only found one of four. So I not only ruined a hunt on the perfect morning on a spot I’m pretty sure had not seen a hunter all year, I lost about $60 worth of arrows and broadheads! Doh!

Did you do any good scouting at Ramsey, @JaredG16?
That sucks!!! I'm glad I didn't climb up before noticing. Haha

I didn't do much scouting after that. Was a little too disgusted at myself. I did find some nice oak trees but saw little sign around them. I probably should have scouted a bit more but I was a little too ticked off at myself to concentrate. Hehe

Just gout back from Tensas for a couple of days and the action is hot. Hated to leave. I saw a monster my first hunt. He came to about 40 yards. Kinda makes me want to bring a compound and leave the traditional at home. I was going to move about 50 yards in front of where I was hunting at lunch. I heard the deer coming(pushing a doe) at 10:15. If i moved when i first decided to that deer was at 15 yards for 2 minutes! Seen other young bucks cruzin. I have some ideas for when I get back. I learned a lot the few days I was there. @Tjraley2 hope you are ready.

Maybe you shouldn’t go back to that spot and just let me go to. You know, since you got poison ivy and all...

Here are a few pictures that I took.

Are you kidding me I wasn't bringing you to that spot at all. I'm going to send you to a whole different area.

That’s all bears tearing those trees up. And poison ivy is on nearly every tree in that place.

I just spent 4 days up there and found it kind of strange. No doubt the rut is happening but I saw on two separate occasions where does still had button bucks with them. I guess they’ll come in heat in a couple weeks? I didn’t shoot any deer but shot a pig to make sure my sights were still on. I try to refrain from shooting pigs with the bow because it’s getting too expensive but every now and again I can’t help myself.

I call this one “Pig Palace”

Actually got a little spooked at this. The piglets were still in the nest and I could hear momma in that log (hard to see) chomping her teeth together. At 1.8miles back by myself with no cell service and armed with only a bow, I got nervous. Took the picture and rolled out of there real quick like.

I got charged at the very first time I saw a nest like this. I though a hunter was covering something up so I went to investigate. The piglets shot out and momma came running in. Luckily she stopped 10’ from me and spooked by my smell. Ever since then I get uneasy when I stumble onto them.

Nice buck! Was that in tensas?
Yup! Summinnuhgun!!! I'm happy for him, but there was a second buck (bigger) trailing this one. After he shot, his buck buckled after less than 10 yards and was on the ground. Well, there was a second buck behind him. My buddy (understandably) was damn near jumping out of his stand after his buck hit the dirt. The trailing one immediately spotted him and spooked... White tailed me. All I needed was 10 more yards for a shot.
