Louisiana Saddle Hunter's Thread

All in all... It was awesome to be able to actually watch the entire sequence of events unfold for my buddy's first buck kill. I experienced it all with him, including his buck fever SHAKING when we got to the big boy on the ground. It was a privilege to experience that with him, from stalk to shot to harvest.

Well y’all got another Louisiana guy on board! I haven’t bought a saddle yet but been doing a lot of research just trying to decide which one I will get. I been hunting out my Millennium M7 with 6 Muddy pro climbing sticks. I met a guy few years back in Tensas, actually helped him drag a spike out with a 3 pt I killed. He was using a saddle and it spart my interest. I’ll for sure be getting one before season. Y’all have any tips? Thanks

Welcome to saddlehunter. You should check out the saddle hunter map. Reach out to some of the closer members to see their equipment, the more setups you see will help you make a decision on what saddle you would prefer. I have a Kite. If you are close to Prairieville/Baton Rouge let me know and you can try it out.

I finally got a kill out of my saddle. Good eating size doe at 110 lbs. Nice to get some redemption after the botched shot on a buck earlier this year.

Got my predator in and it’s (for me) by far more comfortable than the ROS. I really like the dynema rope mod on my API’s, but I’ll be cutting them down this off season.

I’ll be ready to hit some public next year!

Welcome! If you are in the Baton Rouge area I have a Kestrel, Mantis, and a modified Anderson. I also have ez kut drill and bolts, helium Minis, and climbing spurs for climbing methods. I also may be getting ready to sell my mantis so if you decide you like it you can purchase without having to wait in line if a large will fit the bill. I also have some other things I may be willing to sell. I may be able to get you set up and everything but a predator platform if you so choose. But if nothing else you can come by and check everything out and kind of get an idea what you think you like before you go spending money. Shoot me a PM if I can help you out. I'll be happy to, even if we got to meet up somewhere.

Thanks bud! Where can I find the map? I live in South end of Grand Parish. I talked to one guy in Forest Hill I’m gonna go check his set up out. He has sit and drag with rock climbing harness.

Thanks bud I might be interested in the Mantis. I was looking to buy either Mantis or Kestrel. I have a Muddy pro sticks. So I’m good with the climbing part just need a platform, saddle, and everything you tie off with. I don’t know what any of that is called lol

I also have a tether, lineman's belt, back support band, and one pouch that I would also be willing to part with. All you would need is a couple of carabiners and a couple of ropeman ones and you'd be set.

I'm also from Louisiana...
I've been reading and lurking on the site for a while...
/wave Bayou_Boys... glad you made it here buddy

I am moving to either a kite or a kestrel for next season.
I will either use my LW sticks or get some WE Steps for my climbing method.
I will be searching for the right platform for my needs and I want a new backpack.

Are there any good videos you guys could link that show climbing with a lineman's belt?
I tried it this past weekend and it seems like a pain in the arse.
But as I get older (and less agile) I would like to stay tied off from the ground.
I think a Ropeman1 would help me. Can you use those with any carabiner?

I guess we both had the same idea Reggie!

Same Reggoh on BB? Ropeman 1 on linesman belt is a must have. I’m in Lafayette area if any new guys want to try my stuff.

Yes Sir! That is me.

I guess I need to order some 11mm rope and a Ropeman1 to make myself a good lineman's belt.
I tried it with my 8mm rope tether and just the carabiner this past weekend. It was slow and hard to use.
Another issue I have is carrying 4 sticks and the stand up the tree with me so I don't have to go up and down multiple times.

Normally when I set up my lock on I put the first stick (with aider).
I then carry 2 sticks up with one on each side so they don't clank together. (trip #1)
Go back down and grab the last stick and my stand hanger block. (trip #2)
I go back down for my stand and backpack (trip #3)
I use a 25' retractable dog leash for my pull up rope on my bow.

I can do this sequence in about 5-7 minutes without the lineman's belt but I would feel much safer using it.
I just don't want to spend 20 minutes hanging my stand.

I might need to make a trip over to Lafayette this spring to test out some gear before I order.

With 4 sticks set your first one and hang second stick on the strap with gear tie or loosely set it next to your first. Hang the other two off your side and climb up. Remove the stick you hung loosely and set it. Continue as you normally do. One trip that way. I use two sticks, a removable aider and one wildedge step. Can get 20ft or so with platform. Give me a holler when you want to come.
