Louisiana Saddle Hunter's Thread

I use to love hunting around little bear. It’s been years since I hunted it but the few places I hunted in tensas that was one of my favorites. Then again I didn’t know a thing about hunting then.

How many years? That area has been changing drastically the last 5. Pigs have pretty much overrun that area.

Been somewhere around ten. That’s was the last time I hunted tensas. Also so damn good bass fishing in that lake. A buddy of mine stored a pirogue back in there and we would fish there pretty regularly.

I'm self employed, and my work is seasonal. So after the grass slows down and with exception of the week before Christmas and Thanksgiving I can pretty much finagle my schedule however I need to. I almost never have to work a weekend and there are plenty days during the week that I can be off to make a trip. The only public land I'm familiar with is tensas and that is very limited. So if there are any of you guys who have hunted other places and are familiar with their camping Arrangements I would be open to any suggestions. From the Monday after Thanksgiving until I think the 13th of December I will be hunting tensas. I know the modern firearm lotteries and the primitive Firearms hunt Falls in that time zone on the weekends so it'll probably be pretty busy around there, but I'll plan on doing most of my hunting during the week. So I don't know if any of y'all want to try to make that trip or not. Sounds like a few of y'all are going to be up there already. I will probably mostly be staying at my friends camp in Tallulah, but would be down for bringing my tent and doing some camping with the rest of you guys if y'all would like to try to get together. I can contact Hunter's Bend and see what availabilities they have for primitive camping. Is anyone available for a weekday hunt or is it mostly going to be weekend? Sorry y'all I'm not used to taking point on stuff like this.

Late season would probably be best for me but if y’all agreed on a date other than during that time I’d try to make it. When we go to tensas we rent cabins in poverty point.

I'm okay with late-season as well the rut really kicks off after Christmas or the first week of January. I also like the poverty point idea. Especially if we have a winter like last year It'll be pretty damn cold in a tent. My buddy killed a hell of a deer New Year's Day last year I think he said it was about 17 degrees with a 20 or 30 mile an hour wind all day. I think they have 7 guys in his Club right there and Tallulah and he was the only one on a deer stand. Here's the deer came back with that day.20180103_123454.jpeg20180103_123502.jpeg20180103_123129.jpeg

That’s a pretty one

So does someone want to head up this operation and really set some ideas in play. And honestly I’ll go wherever whenever. I’ll miss my rut as long as I’m catching another one somewhere else.

Let me get some information from my wife as far as her work schedule goes. I'll get some ideas rolling and put them out there hopefully tonight. My initial thought is the first or second week of January get together at tensas and rent some cabins at Poverty Point. The rut should be wide open at tensas that time of year in the hunting should be excellent. I know cabins will be a little more expensive but my opinion a hot shower and a hot meal after being out in the woods all day is worth every penny. Anybody interested as of right now in this idea just say I'm in that'll give me a rough estimate of how many people we need to look at having sleeping arrangements for.

I did see a decent amount of hog sign in that area. From the guys I've talked to it's my understanding that the Hogs are getting bad in Tensas in general. I'll be honest I have limited time in Tensas and only that that section of the Woods. I have a friend who has some private land right there on the other side of the tensas river and they said the Hogs are terrible. I do have a few spots that I found that I want to try out though. I concentrated most of my efforts between little bear and Alligator Bayou. Seems like there's a lot of foot traffic around Little Bear. Not so much the areas I was at. Do you have any recommendations of other places I should try out when I get out there again SwampFox? I know there's a ton of land out there and I have a lot to learn. Any suggestions you might be able to throw my way would be greatly appreciated.

1st week in January would probably be a good week for me. Probably couldn’t do whole week but a few days would likely be doable. I could probably get my brother in law too if in conjunction with weekend.

I'm having my third child any day now. Put those things together, I don't have high hopes for success. My goal for this season is to learn my equipment, hunt smart when I have the opportunity, and put a little meat in the freezer.

I mostly hunt public (Lake Ramsey WMA) but have permission on a real small piece in St. Gabriel and hunt my dad's 40 in Alabama a few times. I hope to put some time in at Tunica and Sherburne

I understand the feeling my friend. I had two young children then got blindsided by a divorce so the last few deer seasons have been pretty lean for me too. I've only hunted Tunica a couple times, used to hunt a lease right down the road towards Woodville. If you're within striking range of there I'd put my time in Tunica learning it and forget Sherburne unless you have a boat to get away from the road hunters. There's some deer in there but much of it is overrun with hogs now and I don't think the flood a few years ago helped the deer population.

Man sorry to hear about your divorce. I can imagine that derails your plans.

I've been looking at Tunica real hard on Google Earth. Think I may make a few post-season scouting trips there in February. I prefer hills over alligators.

I may be in pending the dates. I'm a shift worker aswell and I'm generally in that area of the state that time of the year. If I go, I'll sllep in my tramper, just need a place to park.

Ok guys, I'm in North Louisiana and grew up hunting Tensas. I work for a small sporting goods store in Bastrop called Simmons' Sporting Goods in the archery department. My best deer to date came from Tensas Christmas day in 1998. I've taken some good deer there since but can't top 145".

Simmons is a pretty well known sporting goods store! Welcome Michael!
