Louisiana Saddle Hunter's Thread

I may be in pending the dates. I'm a shift worker aswell and I'm generally in that area of the state that time of the year. If I go, I'll sllep in my tramper, just need a place to park.

+1 great store! When I first moved to LA I was driving somewhere and stopped to have a look not knowing what it was. Walked out with a decent pile of reloading supplies :D

I’ve got family near Holden, LA. Do any of you guys hunt in that area? (Public land)

So I'm thinking January 3-7. That would be four nights and would run each man approximately $115. That is if we have 6 per cabin so everyone gets there own place to sleep. That being said one of those is a pull out. I think the best way to figure cost is to see who all wants to stay in a cabin and see how many cabins are needed and split the cost even. Anyone wanting to bring a camper I would suggest reserving a camper spot(I don't think they can be parked by the cabins, but I'll ask). As far as meals I'm open to suggestions. Breakfast/ lunch each man for himself. Supper we could all cook something and share, or cook one big meal. Gumbo, Chile, jambalaya, you get the idea. To be honest as far as meals go I can live for a weekend on beef jerky and granola bars, but thats me.

@denots what campground u thinking? Huntersbend?

No I was thinking Poverty Point. I believe it's the only place around with cabins. Everybody could tent camp if that's what they wanted to do and we could check out hunter's Bend. I don't know the availability of camper spots I would have to find out. I'll be honest at that time of the year we tend to get a lot of rain and if I don't have to sleep in a tent I'd rather not. I'm a manly man and all but it sucks waking up to go hunting and all your crap is soaking wet. If we get six guys per cabin for 4 nights that's pretty dang affordable at $115 a piece. They also have lots of camper spots but I don't know how close the campers are in a relation to the cabins. I'm going to try to make a couple calls tomorrow can get some more information. Another benefit to having cabins over tent camping is there's a kitchen! That's a big bonus in my book. Not to mention will be getting towards the end of hunting season and I don't know about y'all but I spend every second that I'm allowed to in the woods so I'm usually pretty run-down and would prefer to sleep in a bed. Guess I'm getting soft in my old age I don't know about tagging out the first day I'm hoping I have to save a tag just for this hunt. We will see this will be my first year with a recurve so I may have six tags.

The hunters bend cabins are basically just a small room with beds, A/C, and heat. They also have a pretty nice skinning shed and 2 showers. Depending where you plan on hunting it's basically located on the NWR. The utility hook-up camper spots are near the cabins, but they also have some primitive spots available for pretty cheap if they are full up and they allow the use of a generator. Everything is within walking distance.

I have never been to the poverty point cabins though.

Okay cool thanks for the info. I've never actually stayed at Hunter's Bend only passed by and no one was in the office to speak to. I was going to try and put a phone call in and see what was available. I was however not aware that they had rooms to stay in outside of having a camper or tent camping.

JakeB is correct. I have stayed at huntersbend a couple of times and also have a camp close by. Hunter's Bend is centrally located and the cabins will sleep 4 people with each one having their own bed. I think they're around $100 a night. But, it also depends on where you plan on hunting.

Poverty point is good with me. I like the cabin idea. I only say ill pull my camper bc, im always on call. Its not likely ill get called out, but it does happen. I just dont want to plan for a bed in the cabin and have to back out.

Also a helpful hint while hunting there, screenshot the blood dog list and text out. Cell service sucks.

Incase anyone was wondering on face book there is a list of guys/gals that run blood dogs for free. They enjoy it. Its called the louisiana blood trailing network. Its very organized. They list the names and phone numbers of handlers by parish.

There’s no kitchen in the cabins just beds heater and a light switch. Bring a sleeping bag and a pillow and if in cabin six bring two sleeping bags. The crack underneath the door is so big that you can sweep out the mud without opening the door. The cabins rent out pretty early so if that’s where you plan to stay might go ahead make reservations for them now

Hunters bend

Poverty point cabins are excellent. They have a full kitchen and a satellite TV. The only trouble with them is there’s no place to skin a deer. The cabins are on pilings situated over the lake. I would recommend bringing a fishing pole for fishing at night.
