Pearl River was a close second and is generally squirrel hunters. Ive had guys get so close to me there i could hear em cracking their shotgun barrel open to re-load...shooting every tree that the wind blew in....
I've heard countless horror stories of friends who have experienced the wrath of the orange army out at Russel Sage and Sherburne WMA during gun season.
The green army gonna be out there in mass too lol (LDWF)
I can't commit with family and work, but will continue to follow the thread. I've no experience in Kisatche, what's the general location plan, camp area ?
In my experience they leave them for last if at all, they like them but seemingly bc of the overcup they avoid until necessary.anyone know how deer use/prefer overcup oaks? I found a few spots leaving out after my set today that were LITTERED with overcup acorns but there wasn't any obvious feed sign around them..... not a ton of missing caps, etc. I'm wondering if I may be able to catch them later. also, it's been so dry that I'm unsure if feed sign is obvious right now at all....
I’ve heard some folks say it’s a bad year bc of the drought but 3 of my friends so far are nearly tagged out and have also all got the biggest bucks of their lives. Between our group we got a lot on camera though. I’m still dealing with outside things so I don’t have tags yet but I’m hopeful to fill a few in December/Jan.good to know. thank you.
feed trees are kicking my arse. I've found maybe 2 cow oaks producing only a little, and maybe one white oak with any mast to speak of. I was hoping these overcups might get hot... red oaks and water oaks seem totally fine, though, just not seeing any sign of the deer hitting them yet. again, I've been doubting myself since it's so dry that tracks aren't preserving well, but I've not found anything all year that looks like the 'primary feed tree / ground disturbance / piles of scat' type sign we all know to look for.
I’d be down but as someone else said us in N.LA have way better and more deer than those down south so it wouldn’t be fair.Public land challenge?
Mann that’s crazy karma not even giving you beginners luck. My first year hunting people swore I kept a horseshoe in my pocket lolWell they are doing stuff right. Down here in SE LA, I'm on the struggle bus. 8 sits and not even seen a deer while in the saddle. I know I'm a greenhorn still but damn!

That's a pile of shot opportunities.dont feel too bad...im not doing any better with 10 or so sits. heres what ive seen:
2- hogs
1-armadillo
1-yearling
8-turkeys
1-chipmunk
1-bobcat
3-rabbits
-too many squirrels to count....
i def should have shot one of those hogs....the bobcat was kinda cool, he was chasing one of the rabbits so didnt have a shot on him. That's a pile of shot opportunities.
I never hunted cocodrie before but back I’ve always heard good things about it, but if your going that far north might as well go to Tensas or Ophelia or Kisatchie around Pollock section.I’m legit considering making a trip to Bayou Cocodrie NWR or Yancey WMA during the rut. It has an outstanding deer population and deer quality. I’ve talked to several hunters who make trips there. It’s not near as pressured as SE LA.
