Louisiana Saddle Hunter's Thread

I've wondered if this is true for other areas during this drought? Particularly swamps and marshes that have opened up.

although I have also thought the OPPOSITE in that they cluster around whatever little water there is, moreso in the bottomlands.... - but I haven't been able to confirm/disconfirm either way.
High water always condenses and pushes animals to a particular area....hell our whole rut is dependent on spring flooding which is why river basin deer rut so damn late.....
I'm sure in the right situation though water pockets hold deer but we just have sooooo many bayous and spring fed creeks that it is definitely difficult to play the water hole game unless the situation is perfect.

thats just the trip him and his dad make every year so i either tag along or dont lol...in the past ive been doing sicily island around this time...
I've hunted a lot of public lands in LA but never have I ever stepped foot in Sicily Island. Honestly I've pasted by it quite often and it looks fairly intense terrain. Reminds me of red dirt-wilderness area.

its not easy terrain for sure. only area ive seen in La that has near vertical drop offs...very, very steep out there....saw the biggest buck of my life out there last year and never could get close enough to him...

Are you from that area? What made you go over there?
no im from SE La....me and a group of buddies decided to go out there few years ago from word of mouth. More buck sign than ive ever seen in my life out there...almost too much, i didnt know how to process it lol from my SE perspective...

They kill some good ones in there?
the first year we was there we saw an older guy and his buddy leaving with a very nice one in the back of truck on his 4 wheeler. He told us he had more like that one on his wall at home. The one i saw was a def shooter...chasing a doe and when i saw him all i saw first was his rack and i noticed how far past his ears it went and super tall tines....he haunts me to this day...he was across a creek 65 yards and i was out there 2-3 days before rifle season with my bow...

Tunica has some monsters in it. Typical MS River deer. Deer die of old age back in those bluffs because nobody wants to get back to them. Tunica gets a little "busy" during primitive weapon weekend because there are some planted food plots, but that's about it. You don't have to worry about squirrel hunters much because nobody is walking those brutal hills to shoot a few tree rats.

Here are some Tunica Deer:
